Well, made it 6 months. Dropped 12 inches or so and now it came back up, but without the backlight. I will gladly read any past forums if someone will let me know what to search under. Not a newbie that asks before looking...just do not know where to look. Thanks.

I guess backlight broken or backlight stopped working might work... it has been discussed before, but generally it's due to a component that's been ripped off the circuit board. I'm not sure if anyone's actually fixed this before.

So, six months old. Do I turn it in under warranty and wait for a replacement, or do I pull off the sticker and give it a try myself? Chris

I won't be surprised if pulling off the sticker will void your warranty. I would have it fixed under warranty -- that's what warrantiers are for.

Chris, Philips has stated on this forum that removing the sticker is evidence of unauthorized repair, the warrantee is void. As far as replacement is concerned it'll depend on whether Philips deems this to be for "other than intended use" i.e. you dropped it, not covered under warrantee. If it's deemed non-warrantee damage, but still within the 1st year warrantee periond, they'll want $150 for the replacement. I'd call them, and tell them whatever you think appropriate and go from there. Jim L

I have this exact same problem. My Pronto is not in warrentee so I decided to try and fix it. There is a little wire spool looking thing broken on the circuit board attached to the touch screen. It almost looks repairable to me, but I don't have the skills or tools at this time. I do plan to have a friend of mine take a look who designs circuit boards, I figure he will know if it can be repaired or not. Good luck, and you may want to search for Torx #6 to find more details as that is the kind of screwdriver you will need to open the case. Hope that helps.

Yeah, finding a Torx #6 driver may be your biggest challenge. When I went for mine a while back I had no problem -- but today in the store looking for a particular hex driver, I looked and couldn't find a #6 torx.

TRY A #7 TORX. WORKS BETTER. EASIER TO FIND.

Same problem here, inductor L1 broke into pieces. Mine looks repairable as wel, but as of now a did not make an atempt on it, because i feel it's a one chance only thing... Any suggestions?

You should be able to find a #6 torx wrench at Sears. I picked one up today for $2.99. Works well. Now I need to figure out how to fix the inductor....

I have the exact same problem a couple of days ago. I dropped my pronto and the light went out. Went to the web site for phillips and went to customer service support. They were very nice and since unit almost out of warrenty let me exchange the unit for another pronto. Infact, they will give you a problem number and when you send it UPS they will be able to track the number and will send a pronto out almost the very next day to you. I would recomend doing this. I sent mine in day before Thanksgiving and will recieve other one by the end of this week... G

G, I did not have as much luck with customer service. Since my unit was about 3 months out of warranty, they would not replace it. Anyway...I successfully repaired my backlight this evening. Here's what I did: 1. Removed the damaged L1 inductor (being careful not to overheat the pads and delaminate them) 2. Ordered a replacement inductor from a company called CoilCraft (look for them on the web). I ordered part number DS1608BL-224, a .22mH inductor, which is intended for backlight applications. 3. Replaced the inductor. Works great so far this evening. Disclaimer: I have no idea how well this is going to work long-term. Try at your own risk :>) Thanks to the person who measured their functional L1 inductor and posted the value for the rest of us!

I have the dropped Pronto syndrome. So on the UK sites I can find a TORX #6 and a 0.22mH inductor so I am ready to roll with a repair! The description of the inductor is 22mH, 30mA, 80 Ohm is that going to do the job? Any digi photos to help me? Thanks

I too have had a case dropped Pronto syndrome, but have fixed it thanks to the helpful information posted above. I ordered a new inductor from the European headquarters of Coilcraft, Glasgow, Scotland - phone 01236 730627 (ordered Thursday arrived Saturday morning). I already had a precision screwdriver set from Halfords £19:00, but Maplins do stock single T6 drivers at around £3.00. Using a small Antex iron successfully removed the damaged part and fitted the new one.Pronto now back up and running. Once again, thanks to the guys above for posting the information.

I wouldn't think that a drop of 12" should cause a device to malfunction. I would just send it in for a warranty repair.
