Hi, I've just upgraded my RC5000 with the latest software (sys 4.2, app 5.0) and now, when I use a hard button such as volume up the LCD screen lights up. This is a little annoying so I'm wondering if there is a work around?

Thanks

Jamieo,

I believe you have found another "feature". I don't believe there is a work around.

Why in the world did they do that? I always liked how the hard buttons were separate from the LCD screen. I'm a "volume tweaker", there's no way I want the screen on all the time.

I always liked it too. Maybe it's just a glitch (I hope it's not a feature) and they'll fix it soon - but maybe not!

Thanks for your replies,

Jamieo,

I believe that this was a deliberate change in response to other users who complained that it didn't light up. I will forward your comments to Marantz in Chicago.

Eric: If that's the case, make it SELECTABLE. If 50% of the users want it one way, no sense annoying the other 50% just to please the first!

And I'm sure they could incorporate four setup screens if it's really needed. ;-)

Another reason I'm holding off on the upgrade. It's really nice sitting in the dark, adjusting the volume, without the backlight suddenly coming on. If I want that it's real easy to get, I just touch the screen.

Hmm, decided to go back to the old firmware today. Only problem - the old setup program can't handle the new ccf file correctly - guess I'll have to lose any recent changes then!

Jamie-
Did you go back to the old firmware because of the hard button/backlight issue, or was there something else that you didn't like??

From my perspective, I think the backlight on/hard key function should be selectable. What would really be nice was if you could control how it responded for each device via the properties page.

Did your remote actually flash back to the old firmware??

If it can't be made into an option, it needs to go back to the old way. The ergonomics made sense: touch the little hard buttons, the little hard buttons light up; touch the screen, the screen lights up. Whatever you are using lights up - what's to complain about that?

With this "new" logic, the hard buttons should now be lighting up when you touch just the screen, which would also be very annoying. Is this the case? I don't want to upgrade mine to find out, as this "feature" easily outweights any other benefits in this new version.

Steve13 - The hard button/backlight issue was more than a good enough reason to go back to the old firmware (even though there was stuff I liked in the new firmware) - very disappointing.

Daniel - yes, my RC5000 flashed back to the old firmware with no problems. However, my ccf file that I had changed in the new RC5000 setup would not work correctly with the old setup program. There was two extra system properties under home that couldn't be opened but could be deleted!? Also, the setup program crashed a few times but - and most importantly, I could not save it (or emulate it), the progress indicator would just blink from 0 - 100% for an indefinite amount of time until I cancelled.

Anyway, I tried a load of stuff to get the old RC5000 setup to accept it (I think I even deleted all the contents at one point so it may just be a header?) but in the end I just opened the new (incompatible) ccf into the old setup program and copied a panel, created a new ccf and pasted, blah blah blah...

One point to note though - If you open the new type of ccf in the old setup program and then try to save it it'll just creat an invalid file. SO SAVE WITH A DIFFERENT FILE NAME!!!

...and another vote to get rid off that $^#%$%#& hard_keys_make_lcd_backlight_come_up feature. At least make it an option through the setup... I REALLY hate the new backlight behaviour!!

Just an idea... I saw there is a Save As Old Format option available when saving a ccf file. Haven't tried it but that may just be what's needed to be able to use the new ccf when you've downgraded the remote again or want to use the file on another remote.
Don't know for sure but it may be you need to add the Developer = 1 line to Pronto.ini in order for this option to become available.

No, Save As Old Format should be available at all times. DEVELOPER=1 only adds "Save as Intermediate Format", which isn't any use to end users.

Thanks Dan, for clearing that up... didn't have RC5000Setup handy when posting yesterday :)

By the way, Developer=1 also adds a 'Configuration is (factory) default' option to the System Properties - System Properties tab.
