There's a ccf that I want to make into the "revert to" file. It's 192 kB and the "revert to" file can only be 184 kB.

Just what is it that takes up room in a ccf?

This ccf almost universally uses artwork buttons in the ProntoEdit4 software.

There are a couple of old components, no longer used, still in the file, so those must go away.

It controls a bedroom system where either a TV slides out and rotates, or a screen comes down for projector use and the TV is rotated and backed up. That and screen drop are controlled by a Xantech CC62. Sources are CD, DVD, Satellite; Zone 2 gets audio and has its own IR sensor for operation from that room.

What would be a strategy to lower the size of the file while keeping the same functions?

This is the same system that's been bugging us for years because it reverts from time to time with no apparent reason. Importing the file into an RC5400 seems to have solved the problem; whatever hair-ass-trigger thing is going on in the 5200 doesn't happen in the 5400. But then the screen died and I haven't gotten to even trying to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

edit May 19 6 PM:
Oh, yes, another thing: I NEVER learn commands to buttons. I always learn commands to one or two panels with a simple rectangle for each label, then I alias to those commands. For everything. So each component has usually two panels with commands, then all artwork panels have buttons linked to commands or having macros consisting of all aliases.

On the other hand, now that I've removed the VCR from the file, it's only 185 kB. Cool.

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie, you can use Olivier De Couvreur's CCF Tools to decompile the CCF to a .csf file and bitmaps folder. This will allow you to example all the stuff that's inside. Once the bitmaps are extracted, you can see whether or not you have duplicate images by viewing this folder in 'Filmstrip' or 'Thumbnail' view in Windows.

I'm not sure I know what "duplicate images" actually means.

...and if I do have duplicate images, what does that mean to this situation?

Is that post meant to say "duplicate images take up lots of space"? That would make it an answer to my question.

Does it matter whether I have duplicate images if those images are taken from the PE4 Gallery?

Would a set of transport commands for DVD and a set of transport commands for DVR, if each one used the same rounded rectangle with border from the PE4 gallery, count as duplicate images?

Duplicate images result from how they are loaded. A drag from the gallery into 2 distinct panels should be considered a load from disc in the next section.

If you drag identical images between 2 panels (either Shift, Ctrl, or Alt drag - I forget which copies icons but keyboard shortcuts in F1 Help will tell you), you have one copy as the software keeps a reference count on the images. If you load the same image from from disc into 2 panels (using button properties) you have 2 copies. Into 3 panels, 3 copies, etc...

Any duplication results in an increase in size.

As stated earlier, please decompile your CCF using CCF Tools to see just how bad the duplication is. If you want to solve your problem, this is the only way. Once you find duplication, simply eliminate duplicate bitmaps and their references (once you open the .csf file in a text editor, you will see what I mean).
