Hello:

I am on a Intel Mac running Leopard (10.5.6).

About a month ago, I was able to download a copy of Tonto 1.48 and use it on this Mac to upload and download with no problems to a TSU6000.

However, my copy of Tonto is missing and I am trying to re-download it. All that seems to be available on giantlaser.com is Tonto 1.44. This version does not seem to be compatible with Leopard.

What happened to version 1.48??

Is there anywhere I can get a copy?

A little more info:

All download links that I can dig up (from VersionTracker, MacUpdate, CNET, etc) lead to:

[Link: giantlaser.com]

Which just produces some XML output.

Any idea what's up?

There seems to be something of a problem with the scripting on that site right now... tried to follow a link from another download site and got stuck in an infinite loop of 404 error pages opening up in new tabs. Plus the "latest download" link results in a 500 server error.

I was able to download "tonto.jar" from:

[Link: giantlaser.com]

Double-clicking "tonto.jar" does seem to launch as version 1.48, but I get the same message I see with 1.44:

"Tonto cannot find the serial communication Libraries. Upload/Downoad has been disabled."

Tonto 1.48 was running fine in 32 bit mode, then it asked me to download Java webstart again. It seems to only way to download Tonto now is together with Java 7 which only runs in 64 bit mode (I'm running OS 10.7), so Tonto won't upload or download (can't find library serial communications). Has anyone solved this problem?

Maybe this will work...

Uninstall Java 7, go to Oracle/Sun and download and install 32 bit version of Java6/7 if OS supports it. Launch Tonto and see what happens. If JavaWebStart asks to update, choose no!!!

Wondering if anyone else has any ideas? I am trying on Mountain Lion, and am also stuck on the:

"Error loading JComm JNI library"

error. Is this something that needs to be built specifically for a particular OS / hardware set?

JNI stands for Java Native Interface where Java uses a C/C++ DLL to perform functionality. The DLL in question is a 32 bit interface and therefore needs a 32 bit OS.

Thx Lyndel. I was able to get it working later that night actually. Been meaning to come back here and post in case anyone else stumbles onto this, who knows maybe it will be me when OSX 10.9 comes out and I spend another evening trying to get everything working! It's possible some of this isn't needed as I tried a *lot* of different approaches but here's what I did:

1. my serial-usb adapter is the Keyspan USA-19HS. I installed the 2.6 version of their driver which does work in Mountain Lion. You need to reboot for this to actually detect the adapter.

2. at some point I had installed Java 7, so I then followed the instructions at [Link: support.apple.com] to drop back down to 6. Not sure if this was necessary.

3. temporarily had to disable OSX app security (System Preferences | Security & Privacy | Allow applications downloaded from: Anywhere) so that I could run the jnlp which has an expired certificate.

4. went to [Link: mrallen.com] and saved the jnlp for installing with Java web start. Ran this to download the app (remember where you save it), and then quit.

5. right click the app icon, and set it to run in 32 bit mode

6. re-enable OSX app security

So now I can just doubleclick the app (it always asks to re-download, I just cancel out of that), and I've been able to pull ccf's off the Pronto and put modified ones back on. Took me a few hours, but glad that my favorite remote still has some life left in it!

(I had also tried running Java from the terminal with various jars I found on mrallen.com, variations on:

java -d32 -cp tonto.jar:libs.jar Tonto

but would always get error messages, presumably b/c it couldn't ever find the JComm lib. Tried lots of different ways to get at it but no luck...once upon a time I was a Java developer but it has been years since it was my day-to-day language and I never used JNI so am not so hot at troubleshooting it!)

Thought a follow-up to this thread might be warranted...

I'm still limping along with a classic Marantz 5200 and needed to add a new piece of equipment to it. Tonto has long been my CCF editor of choice on my Macintosh, but I hadn't used it probably since 2009. I had some issues getting it going on 10.9.1, but was ultimately successful!

None of the stand-alone versions of Tonto function any longer since they require the ability to run PPC code (or the Rosetta environment).

I had an old java web start version, but it was pointing at Stewart's old domain (giantlaser.com).

It finally dawned on me to search here, and this thread's information seems to still be accurate. Using the method above worked fine once I re-downloaded the jnlp from Stewart's current site.

The main "gotcha" I ran into is that Tonto does not appear to like Java7 (1.7). With Java7 as my default installation, the jnlp never gave me the option to save the Tonto application, so I couldn't force it to run as 32-bit. (I believe Java7 is 64-bit only anyway....)

I found the following document on Apple's site: [Link: support.apple.com] that helped me get Java6 going again.

Hope this quick note helps someone else!
