It seems that several of us here are thinking along the same lines - it would be neat to convert various channel logos into a form that could be imported into ProntoEdit and used as buttons.

I've already pulled about 160 icons off various web sites, and through QuickNailer (generates thumbnails) and Photoshop have converted them to 2-bit BMPs, in the four forms (selected/active and the other three permutations).

However, I did this with various scripts, and the results aren't that stellar. The logos are recognizable, but ten minutes in Photoshop tweaking one by hand yields a definite improvement. But I don't have the 30+ hours spare to do this all myself.

Is anyone here willing to help out? I would be happy to act as a clearing house, make sure work doesn't get duplicated, etc. Post a reply to this message letting me know how many you're prepared to take on, and if you have Photoshop.

I have this in process for about every iocn found on directv, dish and ussb, as well as local stations. I've yanked .gif's and pulled them into a Logitech scanner program, changed to 8bit mono and sized. Most come out quite good.
They will be postable next week some time. Of course everyone still needs to know a software date to implement.

PS to last message:

I also think people may be interested in having access to mfr logos as device buttons. I have found most parties who have seen this on my demo like it immensely. This is the next project in hand after the station icons.
I expect there will be a place (clearing house) for such information, and perhaps much more than just icons. I also understand that such a place is in the works but not ready for prime time just yet. When I know more, I'll post accordingly.

The reason I bought my Pronto from you was I figured you were going the extra mile with all the extended work!! So real cool.

Hi,
I have about 23 icons finished. Most are about 44x32 pixels or less, although a few are larger. As "Helpful Person" indicated, to get these icons to be clear takes tweeking. Each of my icons were modified, almost pixel by pixel, and most look surprisingly good. Free to all those who ask - just send me an E-Mail.

Hi,
As promised, I sent several folks copies of my station icons for Pronto. However, I received a few unexpected "return message" indicators and was concerned that the icons did get through. Is everyone receiving them ok?

Clay,
I just tried sending you a message and got back from aol server that relaying was denied. Not sure what this means except that it might explain why you also gor some error messages. Maybe aol's servers are choking on all the new Xmas computer users.

I'd sure be willing to help. I have been working on the same project myself. I've been playing around with scanning them in and then resizing and getting them down to four color that works well in greys.

I have now done approx 150 channel icons and have sized to 100 pixels wide globally.
These will soon be available for download, probably by weeks end.
Watch for a post for the site location.
PS. The site will also accomodate uploads so keep on working over those icons. No one said the ones I've done are the best nor cover every channle that one desires.
I can however say that mostly they look really good on a Pronto and one can put 6-8 on a page.....like all the sports channels....all the news channels....all the movie channels, etc.
Let's all make Pronto into the true artform that it is.
Of course anyone interested in downloading from the site with the thought of imrpoving what's there and uploading teh improvements will certainly be welcome. Whew, this has been hard work for my spare time.
Mfr logos will be next...trouble is they're kinda hard to find as most don't "get" the web yet. Some like newspapers I guess.

I've tweeked about two dozen channel icons so far.
What i'm doing is re-creating every icon in adobe illustratior (vector art - which is resolution independent) and adjusting the size to whatever I want and there is not as much pixelization or distortion when the icon is converted to bmp. I think this is the best way to get a pristine image on such a small scale. I'm curious to see what they look like when imported into pronto edit. if anyone wants some icons, let me know.

Don't forget icons for other tasks--such as the graphical symbols for sources that Sony uses on their problematic touchscreen remote.

Or perhaps the DVD logo, VHS logo, compact disc logo, etc. Even Guide+ and VCR+ logos would be pretty cool. Some of these could probably be scanned from component boxes and manuals.

Jack, perhaps there's reason to keep more than one size of the same icon on www.prontoedit.com - some people may prefer more than 6-8 icons per page, others will like the clarity and easier activation of larger icons. I've done some icons in between the sizes you've done and Clay created. I'm sure you saw them at CES during the three hours JR said you spent at the booth... :-)
