I have both of these models. I knew that the Q50's screen was going to be smaller but I was quite disappointed in the screen quality as compared to the SL's. Images are much more grainy and the images tend to appear posterized. I expected that the color quatlity would be on par with the SL's.

For all of you who have seen both - is my Q50 normal or is it defective?

Thanks

Chris,

I suspect the screen is normal. Keep in mind that the Q50 only offers 4k colors, while the SL offered 64k colors. The SL used a TFT screen in QVGA. I do not know if the Q50 screen is TFT or not, but it is also QVGA (quarter VGA)

Using SL graphics may/will cause posterization, due to the color gap. I mentioned this to UEI during the beta and they indicated they had yet to correct the graphics, for the Q50. The production version of NevoStudioPro has the corrected graphics. I notice the Q50 buttons look good on the screen. If you import some buttons from the SL, etc, they will have that posterized look.

It is such a great remote overall, with so many great features/benefits, the lower screen resolution is very acceptable and only those who had an SL for quite some time, would likely be critical of the screen.

I found that in about two weeks, the screen is no longer the "focus" like on the SL and I hardly look at it much anymore. It has been in my theater for about 2 months now and I am loving it!

I to find the Q50 screen a little washed out (But coming from a TSU9600 I guess I am just spoiled).

I tried several of the included themes and find the screen to look better when displaying dark colors (infinity theme). Contrast is very disapointing when using clear themes like "Metallic", all the colors that look good on the Nevo Pro software all look white on the Q50.

I don't think it is backwards at all. The price point has been improved by at least $100. They added 13 hard buttons.

As I said before...once you get away from the screen focus, which you are used to with full-screen color remotes, it is very close to a perfect remote in many ways.

Z-wave is very solid so far and there are some future benefits in this area.

I hardly look at the screen anymore. But I am really tickled about the transport hard buttons. (especially if you watch a lot of recorded shows).

It is forward in a LOT of ways. Like Dave said, I really like having the transport buttons and it does lessen the need for the screen I primarily use it to switch between sources).

The NevoSL was (is) soooo nice. It felt a slight bit better in your hand (it was a little heavier/solid) and, as mentioned the screen is gorgeous compared to the Q50's. Now, if I hadn't used the Q50 (or perhaps the color Pronto) before this, I doubt I'd mind as much. The Q50's screen appearance is very much like the Harmony 890's in appearance - but about 2-3 times as big.

When I got the NevoSL, going from a ProntoNG took some getting used to as well. I REALLY missed the RF, but I loved the screen and the feel in my hand. Now I have the feel, the RF and about half of the screen quality (or a quarter actually). I haven't used the SL's server functions for more than a year, so the Q50's lack of that is not a disadvantage for me at all.

Both are WAY better than the Pronto's in just about every way but each of the Nevo's have advantages (and disadvantages) over the other. It is certainly not an overall step backwards from the SL. If the S70 (which has the screen, RF, "feel" AND server capabilities) had the transport buttons, I'D BE ALL OVER IT! Sadly, life is about choices and the RF and transport buttons are going to serve me well. The screen is just eye candy.

...I'll miss it though.

Same as you guys. I was a little disappointed at first but I doubt I'd have minded if I did not have a TSU9600 before.

Overall I don't mind it anymore, the Q50 fits perfectly in my hands, hard buttons are much more useful than an all (or mostly) touchscreen remote, wife likes the format better than the TSU9600 too and programming was a breeze.

Yes and plus the extra goodies of the NevoConnect, if you use one. For $299, you get Zwave RF plus RS-232, video & voltage sensing, addressable IR, etc. It is a great value!

Dave, are we to expect similar issues with the availability of software for the Q50 like some others are complaining about with the MX-980 from URC?

Are there any limitations that you know of with editing, custom codes etc that are not going to be made public to the "non-installers"?

Dave, speaking of the Nevo Connect have you experienced any disconnection problem with your installs?

I had mine in a closet in the same room as the HT but it kept disconnecting. Moved the base outside of the closet (kinda defeats the purpose) and still experiences disconnections several times a day.

I'm not Dave and I can only speak for my own personal install but I have NEVER had a single disconnect.

Folks,

The software is included with every Q50 product, on CD. Updates are readily available through NevoStudioPro. Easy to get and easy to administer.

So far, no disconnects with the Nevo Connect. I suspect we will all learn more about the ideal locations in installs, etc., as we go, for the Zwave RF system.

Thanks CKelly33 and Dave. I am still experiencing frequent disconnect and cannot figure out what the cause of the interference is. Does anyone know what band Z-Wave uses?

Only things I have wireless enable are wi-fi networks, cordless phone (5.8) and the Vudu RF remote.

HowDoin, I believe Z-Wave operates in the 908mhz band. I don't have much experience with that band, but there are lots of devices that emit broadband noise, such as:

* Poorly insulated computers
* Microwaves
* CF Lights
* Power conversion equipment
Well, my name's Dewey Oxburger. My friends call me Ox. I dont know if you've noticed, but I got a slight weight problem.

Ox is quite correct. 908.42 Mhz, if memory serves me correctly.

I am wondering if the older 900 mhz wireless phones could bother the NevoConnect? Sure seems in the neighborhood. I couldn't tell you if 900 Mhx is close enough to 908.42 to cause any issues.

Best thing to do is try new locations for the NC and see if you can improve the drop-outs.
