I want to make the medium buttons larger in an existing theme. Unlike other Gallery folders which are groups of .pngs with standard names, themes are stored in .nth files. (Am I being stupid here? What's an .nth file?) I can't find any documentation describing how new themes are produced and organized.

There is no theme builder available so you really cannot edit themes.
