I'm calling it time on my NevoSL... I've loved using it but my marriage just isn't worth using the remote any more.

Issues I'm having
1) someone leaves the remote off the cradle overnight... Dead battery
2) someone doesn't spend an extra second sitting the remote on the cradle correctly... Dead battery
3) the scroll wheel thingie has stopped scrolling once and now scrolls through pages 6 or 7 times... hard to navigate pages
4) Remote locking about once every couple of weeks... hard reset needed.
5) Wi-fi great when working, temporamental when it drops from the network (because of 1 or 2 or just because of solar flares)
6) Learning IR codes has been patchy at best despite it saying that the code has been learnt fine.

I'm gutted because the remote looks great and feels well constructed and the software is SUPER easy to use (as long as you don't have vista)

the whole product seems to be about 25 miles 385 yards... a bloody good effort but just short of the full distance.
The "Installer" only policy of UEI is just pure laziness on their behalf... to be honest if they'd designed some of the features a little better then they wouldn't have needed to do this!

Oh well... I'm going to see how I get on with the Harmony 1000... and if that's trash I may wait for the BEO5 to come out and see how that performs.

Cheers to all of you who've helped me set up the thing in the past.... PARTICULARLY DDARCHE for his awesome networking whitepaper.

I can't speak for the 1000, but, every Harmony remote that I have owned (3 in all) did not work right. Programming is a nightmare and most commands don't work. I used the high end Harmony remotes like the 890.

for example this quote
I have to agree. I think the potential of the remote far outweighs its actual functionality and useability. Without PC customization options, it's severely limited. And I know that anyone willing to shell out $500 for a remote control is likely also someone who wants something they can put their own personal preferences into.
Kaz,

Just take the Nevo SL off of wi-fi and buy a low-cost IR repeater system and it will work like a charm.

Hi,

Is the remote under warranty?
If so you can get the scroll wheel fixed.

As for the battery issue, the IR option is by far the best way to go. But if you can't then do as I have done. In the OFF macro put a massive text line that says "Charge me biach!" That worked for me. :)

P.S. Add a few beeps for good measure.

Out of warranty... and it's off wifi already :(

Lol Syd :D

I'm off to HK for a couple of years anyway so that'll give me some time to sit back and wait for new trendy gadgets to absorb my cash when I come back to england

OK not that I'm a sucker for Gadgets and Peer pressure, but I managed to get a mate of mine to get hold of a MX-3000 for 250quid from the US (vs 700 quid in the UK) I'll have a play with that too and see how it all goes.

Bad car analogy:

NevoSL = Aston Martin.... looks great, fun to use (and program) spends most of the time in the garage
Harmony1000 = Vauxhall Vectra... lots cheaper, does what you want it to but if you're used to the aston it feels like crap. (particularly the programming)

So if you're used to walking then clearly the Harmony is better... if you're used to a luxury ride with all the bells and whistles it's a very poor choice.

Anyway I managed to find a URC-MX3000 for 460 USD (in the UK the cheapest was 1400 USD) so I'll have a play with that and hopefully that'll be the Ferrari that I've hoped for

Cheers for the advice guys,

Kaz

If you want a Ferrari, IMHO the ONLY choice is a Crestron TPMC-8X! Yeah, it's a lot more money, but so is a Ferrari. You'll never be able to approach the level of control of a Crestron system with any of these HT remotes.
