with my new TV set up my components are now on a rack under my TV opposed to being stacked beside it, meaning i now have to move my feet when reclined and actually point my remote. i'm finding this quite inconvenient and am wondering if i should get the nevo link and use wifi?

the question i am posing is if it is worth it, as i understand there might me more frustration involved with using wifi than is created by the inconvenience of pointing the remote.

any input is appreciated, thnx guys

The link works good but has no Wifi build in. So you need connect it to your network. You need the network where you want to place the link. Is that possible in your case?

I have used it with different Access points / routers and all dit work. What dit not work was using 2 or more network devices (routers/access points) to communicate from the Nevo SL to the link (you don't specify the link to use by ip adres, it seems to use the mac adres or some broadcast).

The biggest problem i find using Wifi is that you have to wait to connect to the WiFi network after you turn it on (after it went to sleep because you did not use it for some time).

An other problem is the battery time. With WiFi enabled the battery time is reduced.
But you can test this yourself by just enabling WiFi. Then you can also test if you can connect to your network.

I only use the link with the Nevo SL i use upstairs (i own 2 Nevo's) to control devices in the living room.
In the living room i also using Wifi, not for the link but for controling UPnP devices (NAS server with TwonkyVision, Soundbridge and a laptop with Nevo Media server and Nevo Media Player)

I have, at last, having success using WIFI after a number of attempts.

My final setup is this:

I use a dedicated wireless access point connected via network cable to the link - not connected to your home network.

Use a channel that is at least 3 numbers away from any in yours or neighbours households (any that get detected by NevoSL).

Set the NevoSL to never switch off the WIFI and it will always be ready - battery only lasts about 2-3 hours though (I am currently looking into upgrading the battery - see my other postings in "NevoSL How to open the case"). I currently just put the NevoSL on charge whenever I'm not using it (on my coffee table).

I have only had about 2-3 occasions where the IR didn't send until the second press of a button.

Hope this helps, has been a lot of trial and error over about 6 months and now I can close the cupboard door that houses my AV stuff.

I had my nevo link connected to my home router and had no end of problems. You don't need a router though just a wireless access point.

Another setting I just remembered is, "Connect to all available APs" deselct this, or it will try and connect to your neighbours and causes connection delays. Also use UEI's recommended settings in the WIFI PDF.

I spoke too soon about having no problems as well, I updated the firmware last night and it took me over an hour to get up and running again. All seems OK now though !
(Forgot to write down my IP addresses)

You don't need a second wireless router.

I use a seperate access point for my link. Not because it can't work on my main wireless router router. But i use my second Nevo SL far away from my main wireless router. Using a second access point (i did already own) i get a beter signal. Mainly because it is located at a different place than my main wireless router.

And what is an access point:
Let me list some core devices

hup:
Enables you to let more than one device talk. It has 2 or more network connections.
An hub is not smart. If one network device transmits, every device connected wil receive it.

switch:
Does the same function as a hup. But it is smart. It transmits data only to the devices what need it.

Router:
A switch default handles all ports the same. But with a router there are rules what data my go to wich port. You can define rules (routes) how data must flow.
Most routers have lots of aditional functions like NAT,DHCP,Firewalls.

Wireless Access point:
It enables wireless devices to connect to eachother and to the wired network. It has normaly one wired connection (to connect to a hub, switch or router).

And then there are all those devices that combine multiple devices.
If you have a wireless router then the router and wireless access point are combined in one device.

Access points should be cheaper than wireless routers.
But for home use you see more wireless routers than access points.
And Accees points for business use can be more expensive because of aditions functions like support for radius (central users) and combining more access point to act like one.

Guys,

The trick is to make sure your NevoLink and your Nevo is set to NEVER sleep, within NevoStudio. This will eliminate the need to re-stablish a connection with the network and the irritating time it may take to re-establish a network connection.

There may be some situations where the Nevo SL might enjoy a better, more empty wi-fi connection via a 2nd wap, which is a subnet of the original network. Best case this allows the Nevo SL to be on its own network and not get messed up with other network traffic. Not a requirement at all, just a better option which may assist in having a better signal for the Nevo SL.
