Over on AV Forums a thread has been running bemoaning the state of the game. This just about sums it up. N.B.

yup, that is the full and official name of soccer. When it was new it was competing with other footballs (rugby football in the UK, what became American or Canadian football on this side of the ocean) and had several short hand nomenclatures in the UK (soccer and football were two of them). On this side since we had our own footballs when it came here we prefered soccer, in the UK one became most commenly known as rugby and the one we call soccer tends to be known as football

Er hem! To confuse the situation even further, something that Anthony failed to mention, is that there are two versions of rubgy. Union (15 a side) and League (13 a side).

never been to the UK,so don't know everything there. I enjoy playing soccer (you haven't played soccer until you played it in the snow) and used to work with a soccer nut, that is why I know a bit about it, as for rugby I know nothing about it. The only thing that I know is in the beginning there were many different games called football and in the UK each location had it's own rules. A bunch (or association :-) ) of schools decided to create "standard" rules to facilitate inter school competition and soccer was born. while rugby and what we call football on our side all evolved differently
