I have that exact model, and have not had a single problem. Yours is definitely defective.

Had exactely same problem. DVD Q50 freezes ramdomly and, over time, more often even ! When removing the DVD disks, after a freeze, I found out they were always very hot ! Just found what might be a simple solution to this : remove cover ! So, the heat generated by the ICs does not accumulate and inside temperature stays at normal level. My DVD is playing now again as when I bought it - without a glitch ! Enjoy.

I upgraded my Philips Q50 today with the aid from someone at the AVS
Forum. Since I could not burn the disc he was nice enough to send me
one. I updated the machine and now reads:

'00-'01 5508 4.15.54-O 030314 p66 5.1.14

Over the next weeks I will report if this firmware update fixed
the "freeze" issue.
Best Regards,
Fabio

My Q50 froze recently after I inserted a vcd. Now the display lights up instead of the standby light when it's plugged in, and none of the buttons work either on facia or remote.
Can I do anything to fix this machine (cheaply) as I think it is great when it works, or should i just buy a new (up to date dvd)?
