On an other thread in an other forum, someone started a poll what is the answer to
48/2(9+3) and there are two answers
a) 2
b) 288 roughly half the people voted 2 and even scarier some people are arguing that there is nothing wrong with picking 2 as the answer. |

I don't recall ever knowing that acronym, but I know the answer is 288.

The answer is 2. You perform the function in the denominator first, then divide and anything in parentheses goes first, so you add 9 +3 to get 12, multiply by 2 to get 24, then divide 48 by the denominator (24) to get a quotient of 2. I pick 2, NTTAWT |

From a lot of reading on that specific problem, the main problem is it's a somewhat ambigious question with unclear bracketing. Like asking someone to spell "color" and they give you "colour", which you deem incorrect. However automated means (google, programming languages etc.) will always give you 288 as the answer. |

Daniel, there is a reason the answer is always 288 in a programming language/scientific calculator because the proper way to calculate what is written will give you 288. The only way it is "ambiguous" is if one assumes the person that wrote it (which is not impossible) did not know the proper way to compute it and so miswrote what he meant |

But if you set the 2 in the equation to x and set the equation equal to 288, x then = 1/72. Thus proving 2 is the correct answer.Huh? 48/x(9+3)=288
48/x(12)=288
48/x=288/12
48/x=24
48/24=x
2=x (it may have been mentioned later on in the thread, but I'm too tired and lazy to look.)
