I've exhausted all resources and hope this might trigger someones brain cells.
I have a JVC DVD Video recorder with built in VHS and DVD player. Model DR-MV78BU. I've been using it hooked up a 23" flat panel just fine to watch VHS and DVD.
Today I decided to try to record some old Super Beta tapes to DVD. So I hooked the old composite video, and LR audio, to the same inputs on the JVC recorder. When I turn on the TV I see the Beta video (which like the audio is passed through the DVD recorder to the TV) but the audio is damaged beyond repair. All I hear are occasional spits and pops.
I've checked everything: cables (swapped in alternates) inputs on the TV (swapped), config menus on the JVC recorder, etc. I'm just baffled. Whatever is horked is I think in the JVC recorder unit. Has anyone ever run into something like this trying to transfer old tapes to modern DVD? I've confirmed that the Beta player audio and video run just fine direct to the TV, so it's either on the input or output audio side of the DVD recorder I'm having problems.
Any hints, tips, etc. would be MOST appreciated!

Well, if the only thing it DOESN'T work on is the DVD recorder, then the recorder, for whatever reason, must be at fault. Perhaps it's outputting at too high a voltage, or maybe there's something triggering some limiter/gain circuit on the recorder.

I had an issue once when I hooked up an old Hi-8 camcorder to a Philips DVD-R/RW that was just like what you are experiencing, except my prob. was the video feed was bad and audio was good.
I happened to have an old Composite to RF modulator from an old kitchen TV, I hooked the camera up to the mod. via composite, ran the RF to the DVD-RW and it worked like a charm. I never found out what the problem was, but was happy with the finished results.
Worth a shot I guess, no?

I discovered that I can't even play a VHS with the unit, same problem, so what's clearly happened here is the analog side of the output is shot. JVC == crapola. I went out and bougght a Samsung :(
