I have a 7 or 8 year old Crestron system/project that uses RTI T2-C remotes with Crestron gateways. One of them is defective and can't be repaired. What model RTI T2-C can i replace it with?

FYI: The T2-C+ (what i have been replacing T2-C remotes with) is no longer available from RTI so that is not an option.

ID (Integration Designer software) wont let me convert to a T2-Cs...does that mean it won't work with the same type of gateway? Or does it just mean i have to manually convert the file so that it works with a T2-Cs?

I used to have a T2-Cs. The graphics are totally different. It's grid-based, not open like the T2-C. It used to use the same 433MHz gateway, though...

That probably explains why i cant just convert it. I did see the 433Mhz gateway mentioned in the specs on the RTI website.

The file has a "Send To" menu that lets the client send any source to any of the 10 zones in the house. There was A LOT of mouse clicking involved in getting that part of the menu built. I don't think i have it in me to try and recreate it all on a grid based screen.

Go T2x, it will convert and by default place the 'home' function on the first soft key. You'd have to start from scratch to use the T2Cs. The grid can be turned on or off for either stick in ID. Maybe the client will decide to replace all of the T2c units after seeing the x.

T2x is great because of network uploads. T2x is not great because of no home button and they added those ridiculous "power on" and "power off" hard buttons that have no place on a custom product. They should offer button replacement for the "power on" that changes it to "home". Then the "Power Off" button makes sense.

That explains why I could not pick a smaller graph pattern on the T2cs+ I am working on. First new RTI on several years as most of our projects nowadays are Crestron.

I asked RTI if a table exists that could tell us which old remote programming could be simply squeezed into a current remote, and I also mentioned the Crestron issue. I got this reply today from Chris Pauly at RTI:

There is no table which currently shows what a device can be converted into.

However, Integration Designer can show you the information that you are looking for. First, open a System file in ID and select the legacy remote. Then go to the Device Menu and go to the “Convert Device” option. Hovering over “Convert to” will bring up a menu of the devices that your selected remote can be converted into.

I've never understood why customer service people, especially on the tech end, would not hear a question about this information and respond with "Let's put together a table so the installers don't have to do this -- they can make plans without having to crack open the software; they will see that we are interested in getting them the information they need; heck, we will have a better chance of repeat business if we give them tools specific to RTI product, tools that other manufacturers don't give."

As far as your Crestron compatibility concerns, RTI has a Crestron code set for use with our remotes. Any RTI remote which can transmit via 433 can use this code set to “talk” to Crestron’s 433 Receiver. Currently the T2x, T2cs+, T1b+ and T3v+ all have this capability.

Well, okay, but that wasn't the issue. The issue was that if the programming cannot be imported into a different remote, the work of organizing those commands and turning them into a working remote is lost.

So, while this is not a complete answer, it at least gives some of the parameters of what can be done.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Guess what the first thing i did was...before i even posted here! I opened ID and tried to convert the file to a T2-Cs. It wasn't possible. Then i looked to see if i could convert to a T2x. Not there either.

After posting here it occurred to me that i had an older version of ID installed. A nice compatibility chart would have been great.

I think it's reasonable to assume that you will use the latest version of the software before trying anything you haven't tried before.

True. It's like us and Savant. I don't go anywhere near it until I'm forced to. Fortunately, RTI doesn't have the 1000's of nooks-and-crannies that Savant has. Part of our jobs is staying up on this shi.......

I was actually surprised that i had any version of ID installed. I haven't installed a new RTI remote since 2008.

T2x is here. File is converted. As far as i can tell i only had to make a few changes.

1. Move color (red green blue yellow) buttons from touchscreen to hard buttons.
2. Left/Right Arrow and Home buttons were automatically moved to soft key locations. I changed this. I made the joystick the home button and the red and green circles are left and right buttons. This way the T2x operates as close to the T2-C as possible.

I like the look of the T2x. Looks more polished than the one they had at CEDIA when it came out. Matte finish all the way around (except the touch screen). I don't like the paper clip release of the battery cover. It was nice to be able to tell a client "slide the battery cover off, use the small switch to turn it off and then on again".

Not sure why they have a proprietary connector on the dock. Should just be USB so you have the option of having the dock or just a wire to the remote.

No programming cable included. I liked getting the blue USB cables with T2-C remotes. I was able to leave one at every project and not worry about having one when handling service issues or upgrades. I guess a lot of them end up in landfill so they got rid of it or maybe just mine is missing the cable. A smarter redesign would be to have the power cord be like an iPhone charger. Block that connects to the wall with a USB port. USB cable to the docking station. USB connector on the docking station where the remote connects to it. This way your programming cable is included and you have the ability to go out and purchase a specific length cable because its a standard USB connection all the way through.

Tuesday i get to test whether or not it will "just work" with the existing Crestron RF gateway that we were using with the T2-C that this T2x is replacing.
