Sorry, I cant and wont charge $125 to hammer a stud in. Its not about spending with someone elses wallet. Its about being moral and doing the right thing. To each his own.

What are you talking about being moral?  You're out of your f'ing mind.

Do you understand that your expenses don't change one iota whether you're programming a remote, milking a cow, or hammering wood.  Your expenses are your expenses and they need to be covered.

Does the doctor give you a break while doing heart surgery, and he suddenly realizes you need a kidney, and he happens to have one laying around, and you're already cut open?

When you were getting your brakes done, did they throw in a free transmission?

When you got a cavity filled, did he knock 50% off because he already had his drill?

No. He didn't.  Do ya know why?  Because he doesn't want to.   He's got bills, goals, and a family to feed.

In my entire life, I've never met a group of people who constantly give shit away, leave money on the table, because "it's easy"

Brain surgery is "easy" when you've done it 5000 times.

Meanwhile, the same installers with that mentality are generally cutting corners because they can't afford to buy the products that should be going in to each job.

Read this, memorize it, and live it.

Customers buy on emotion and justify it with logic.  Do you think your customer really gives 2 shits about an additional $100-500 that you're adding to his $8000 system?  He's paying $8,000 for a toy.  Give him the toy that he wants, expects, and deserves.  Charge him accordingly.

I wish I was so independently wealthy that I could give sh!t away.  Why don't you send me your money, and I'll burn mine.

WTF?

Morality.

Morals? Wait until you have a lawyer bill you in excess of $100 for making a handful of photocopies. That'll make you feel better about every penny you extract from clients. I mean, that IS how you make a living right?

It's about the opportunity cost of your time. If I'm only making $50/hr doing something, I am not making $125/hr doing something else. If I can be doing something for $125/hr, why am I going to do something else and only make $50/hr?

My lawyer charges me 100 bucks for a 5 minute phone call. The I get billed to talk to the paralegal and that costs another $100 bucks. For a 5 minute phone call

Business is business. Who said anything about god or morality. My time is my time

It's normal rate for me to anything a client needs me to do. Regardless. And I don't feel guilty and the clients checks always clear.
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

I think that once you figure that it takes time for you to find someone to do the work for you, supervise that company, correct any deficiencies if they're your sub and finally bill for the time you spend on ALL of those things; charging your going rate for 2-4 hours swinging that hammer is all of the sudden cheaper for you and the client.

Now, if you were building a while house and had to bill $50,000 over going rate because your crestron programmer is now also a framer...

When I am doing estimates and invoices and I get that rare moment when I think that I should give a customer a discount or something away for free I suddenly remember about how I was charged for my last doctors, accountant, or lawyers visit.

Did I get a discount or something for free? Hell no!! So why should I give them one? We all need to pay our bills and I for one don't want to work 60-80 hour work weeks because I value my family time.
If you are going to do the job...why not do it the right way?

I just got a bill for $300 bucks from my lawyer for literally a 2 minute phone call.

Billed for the receptionist-billed for the paralegal and then billed for my lawyer total time on phone 3 minutes. 2 minutes for the lawyer...

Was your goal in life to actually carry a lawyers briefs?

You walked directly into that one :).  It's not my fault. You left it wide open.

Hasbeen, and the framer and painter how is charging $35 or less per hour also has bills. You're not really making much of a point other than you would overcharge the customer for framing because YOU have bills and that is fair to YOU. So be it.

Still the same, I wont* charge my customer $125 per hour to paint a freaking wall. I will find someone to do it and cover my costs for doing so accordingly.

I don't get your point about giving away free stuff??

Yes, morals. Just because a lawyer doesn't have them doesn't me we all follow suit. Now, *if the customer insist on me doing it for $125 and we are all in agreement, then so be it. I've often brought up "if I do it its X per hour". It ends in someone else doing it as it should if the customer has any sense. If the customer has more dollars than sense, then he is billed at a higher rate agreed to.
