I had a burp in my internet service yesterday and found that I could not check my appointments at all, because I'm using google calendar. My contacts were the same. Of course, my google email was the same.

This was on my desktop. My Droid 2 still had everything... but is that because it still had internet?

But wait a minute -- I'm going overseas some time in the future, and I want to bring my schedule with me. I want to be able to look at it any time, and I'm not about to sign up for eternal international internet.

At the moment, what occurs to me is that I have to go back to my Palm Pilot! Is that the fact, or is there some other calendar and contacts system out there that doesn't become unavailable if internet is unavailable?

When HDMI came out and could only use six foot cables, I commented that the bestest new technology could not be used in the best systems. Is it now true that the best technology in calendar and contacts can't be used by people who travel internationally, at least not without huge costs?

These don't rely on The Internet or electricity. Changes can be made quickly, and on the fly, with a wooden-wrapped graphite device (not included). You can "load" yearly calendar updates for a very small fee, and it will keep track of all of your contacts. As of this time, e-mail send/receive is not an option but it does let you store a complete database of e-mail addresses, web site URLs, Twitter and Facebook accounts and more! Best of all, tests have shown that it will withstand a drop from a three-storey window AND being run over by a car!

Ernie, go to advanced settings, enable 'Labs' option, and there should be option for offline viewing. I haven't had to use it yet, but I did see it in one of the releases I read about 9-12 months ago.
Let me know if you can't find it, and I'll take a look for ya.

david,
please show me the result of a search of the entire database contained therein that tells me where I've used any particular term. The word "doctor," for instance.

Without search capability, this is not something I'd want. And no, I'm NOT going to let my fingers do the walking.

Note that the editing device is NOT wooden-wrapped graphite, but is rather sandwiched between two pieces of wood. Nobody's going to the spend the money necessary to actually wrap the graphite for this device.

Howver, serious responses will be considered.

Oh, I don't know, use multiple entries or make an index?:-)

Thank goodness I said "graphite" and not "lead"!! You would have had a field day!:-)

Sync to Outlook, use Outlook while overseas, sync and return to Google calendar when you return...

(you can substitute Apple iCal or Mozilla Sunbird in place of Outlook)

And rightly so.

Like the other post stated.  I recommend Outlook.  IMO it's the only thing that Microsoft has ever made that has performed well.  On top of that, the ways you can customize it are endless.  Personally, I would never use anything other than Outlook.

When I first considered going away from the Palm, with everyone saying it's obsolete and with new products few and far between, people kept saying that syncing Outlook with a Droid 2 was a cumbersome thing, a process that could best be described as a workaround. And to be doing this twice or more a day? It seemed like the wrong thing to do.

I'll look into it, though. That thing with the graphite doesn't appeal at all.

Ernie, did you try the offline viewing option I've suggested?
Other than that I suggest outlook as well.
I'm currently using paid google services; I'm going to let the paid year run out and I'm going back to my cheaper godaddy account

I fully understand this was meant to be helpful, but I'm no further along than before I read it.

Ernie, go to advanced settings, enable 'Labs' option,

This kind of vague instruction is why a) I write such damn long posts -- I want to include all the information so a person can actually DO what I say can be done, and b) I get testy when people leave out really important things, such as "go to advanced settings" IN WHAT PROGRAM?

Ok. I open google contacts in Firefox. I go to Tools, which is where Settings is. Under Advanced, there is no choice for Labs. Of course not -- that's a google setting. But your reply could have saved me this step.

So, I look at google calendar. There is no "settings" at all. If I click on the one thing on the top black line that looks like it might be helpful, which is "more," I find other google stuff, and not settings.

So... I think, maybe that gear-looking thing at the far right is what Mario's talking about. It's not labeled at all. When I click on it, there's a dropdown that has Calendar settings, Calendar help, Labs, Use the classic look... no Advanced settings... but since Labs is there, maybe that's what I want.

I click on Labs. I'm told Labs "features... may change, break or disappear at any time." Do I want to depend on something here as my way of seeing records when out of the country?

Anyway... a quick count shows fourteen items, none of which helps me view offline. But then, I'm not in Advanced settings, because it isn't there....

and there should be option for offline viewing. I haven't had to use it yet, but I did see it in one of the releases I read about 9-12 months ago.

So, did it perhaps disappear?

Let me know if you can't find it, and I'll take a look for ya.

Yes, please, tell me where it is.

Google calendar - click the 'gear' at the top right of the screen. Calendar settings and Labs are right there.

Yeah, Jim, that's what I finally ended up doing. There's nothing there about working offline. Since the web page says that Labs can disappear or break at any time, it's no surprise that it's not there.

Not at all a workaround Ernie.  I've got a Droid, and I only use Outlook.  If it takes you more than 5 minutes to sync the 2  I'd be shocked. And from what I know of you, you'll really like outlook and it's different abilities that 99% of the population doesn't use.  It allows you to keep everything in it's place by creating rules.  For example, you can easily send email from people you "know into one folder, and spam into another folder.  You can have outlook create different sounds for different emails.  For example, a VIP customer send you an email, you can have your computer send a specific sound that lets you know you just received an important email.
