I am for the first time trying to integrate(control via IR) a PS3. Tell me this can be done. If so how?

There is no such thing as a discrete power off for the PS3. All solutions to date are work arounds that will vary depending if you are playing a game or are in another part of the OS.
Read through the pervious links provided. Anyone that says they have a device that provides a discrete power off is lying.

smokinghot, you are incorrect. See here: [Link: schmartz.com]The version with the power patch works as a true discrete power on/off. You need a PSP to enable this function, but after that it is rock solid. Here's some pictures from my rack: [Link: avsforum.com]

Ah yes the wire taped on to the front of the PS3, that simulates a button press. I'm well aware of your "work around". I'm in fact the person that posted the pic of your device here on RC.
From what I can tell, I believe the PS3IR+PWR does what you claim. Although it is still a work around, and is only as "solid" as the glue on the back of the sticker.

Well, it's not "my work around", I'm just a customer that bought one. And yes, it's just as solid as the glue on an emitter bug, right??

Here's a question... when the PS3 is off and you send the DISCRETE OFF command, what happens? I'm assuming that enabling "remote start" supplies some standby power to the USB port, but does it also let the device detect whether the PS3 is on or off?

The remote start feature supplies the power needed, and Mike's device looks for USB "activity" to determine device state (on/off). So he (the micro-controller) only allows the power on command to go through when it's off and vice versa. So a true power sense discrete on/off.

So a true power sense discrete on/off. Yes exactly... With actual discrete control, power sensing isn't necessary. Although I stand by my opinion dinom, it is the best work around I've seen, and the one I'd buy to date.

And yes, it's just as solid as the glue on an emitter bug, right?? Lol.. just caught what you were getting at. In that instance I would agree. But not as solid as a IR jack, or RS-232, or blaster for that matter. Hell... even an emitter bug could still have a chance to work if the glue let go. The wire needs to be in contact to function. The sticker only needs to bubble... I'll repeat... to date, the best work around I know of.
