FWIW, I have a Mac M2 running parallels with Windows 11 Arm. I installed CCP and never installed Mobile Device Center and I can connect to a MX-780 without issues. Is there a difference between connecting to the 780 and the 980?

Unfortunately there is a difference. MX-980, MX-5000 & MX-6000 all need WMDC to connect.

Instructions are exactly the same. I am on Windows 11 now and just walked through it to make sure

I totally failed to get it to connect to my Win7 system, spent ages following the notes.

I then tried this win10 file

WMDC-fixes-for-Win10.msi.

from

Quick re-boot and it works, WMDC says connecting for ages, never finished, but my MX980 connect fine.

I have followed the directions. When I get to the "install the mx-980 driver" part I'm not sure what to do. Honestly I tried all 3 that are in my library. But they all reference super old Windows versions (Vista and XP). I thought maybe XP would do the trick but not so much. So now I'm stuck. Thoughts?

Are you using CCP?

My instructions do not mention installing any drivers

Never had any issue with XP, and as I stated in my post a few above Win 7 was resolved with the Win 10 tool.

Yes, using CCP. Can you possibly just repost the exact directions that worked for you as a reply here? It appears I'm getting confused with some other directions that have been posted. Sorry for all the confusion. Just want to get it working and it seems I'm close but just missing some probably obvious step.

Try this:
1.Install MDC (CCP/Tools)

2.If you are unable to change the driver to microsoft usb you need to disable Windows Driver Signature Enforcement.
With the computer running, hold the shift key and reboot.
Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings and click the Restart button.
When your computer restarts you’ll see a list of options. Press 7 on your keyboard to select Disable driver signature enforcement.
Your computer will now restart and you’ll be able to install the Microsoft USB driver

3.Go to device manager. Make sure the remote is plugged in and awake. Locate the the remote entry in device manager (ususally under Mobile Devices). Double click it and select the driver tab. Select update driver. Select browse my computer for drivers. Select let me pick from a list. Deselect Show compatible hardware. In the Manufacturer column selecte Microsoft. In the Model column select Microsoft USB Sync

4.Go to Services, Select "Windows Mobile-2003 based device connectivity, select log on tab, unselect "This account", select Local system account, the check off Allow service to interact with desktop. Next select Windows mobile-based device connectivity. Set log-on tab, unselect "This account", select Local system account, the check off Allow service to interact with desktop. Go to General Tab and select start services.

5.Run CCP, try to download file. It will probably hang. Unplug remote, the replug back in. and try again.

I am at a total loss. I have gotten this to work on a Win10 machine. Just totally stuck on this Win11 machine. I have gone back over the instructions like 10x. WMDC won't recognize the device. Made the changes in Computer Management as indicated. Device Manager just keeps indicating Unknown Device. CCP won't push the update to the remote. Very frustrated at this moment.
