I've contacted Philips in the UK about a repair but this
will cost a minimum of £90 plus delivery! They appeared
to know nothing about the problem!

I'd like to try and fix the unit myself and will open
it up again.


Has anyone successfully had theirs repaired by Philips,
and if so, what did it cost?

For 90.00 pounds you can get an used working unit in e-bay.

Philips do know about this problem as you can see in the post #80 of this thread but they dicided to ignore it and charge to repair.
