I suggest you use Tonto. I installed a new XP machine the other day and added a cheap USB-serial port.
I got the latest driver from the manufacturer and then ran Tonto, the port was COM3 and Tonto had no problems picking it up.
Tonto is fast and reliable. Makes editing a cinch.
