I emailed TW about the 'free hd' they now have on their channel lineup and they really don't have much of a clue about QAM - see below:
Dear Brian,
Thank you for using Time Warner Cable Online Customer Support.
The channels that we send out on the 2-699 lineup are not sent in high definition. The only channels that are in high definition are in the 700 level and they are encrypted. You would need a high definition box to use these services. If you television has a cable card port then there is a box built into the television, and you would need a cable card from us.
I apologize for any inconvenience.
If you have any further concerns please feel free to email us at your convenience or you can contact our 24 hour Customer Care Center at 1-888-683-1000.
Thank you,
Matthew Time Warner Cable Customer Support
Subject: Re: FW:
QAM is the technology that is used by digital cable. Many HDTV sets have QAM tuners in them (in addition to the ATSC/NTSC) and can display the HD signals on the cable line.
On QAM a station can be encrypted or open. Currently you have the HD locals as open along with TBS and the music stations. So can the Free HD stations be switched to un-encrypted?
I know this gets technical so can you bounce this to the appropriate person.
Thanks
Brian
