On other PCs that I do control I just run the Free MS app, I think it's called Essentials or something of that sorts.

On Windows 7, Vista, and XP it's call Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), a free download from Microsoft. Virus and spyware definition updates are pushed out as regular Windows updates which I like. MSE is not compatible with Windows 8 however, not that I'll ever own a system running Windows 8. Under Windows 8 MSE has been replaced with an improved version of Windows Defender which provides the same level of protection as MSE and comes with the operating system.
