You would be surprised how many people are running norton except it is no longer Norton, it has become somthing else, you can usualy figure this quickly since you wont be able to un install it. Norton is the most hacked program of its type. There are so many hacks out there that turn norton into nothing but a big Trojan, sure it still block and removes some threats, all the while some Rusian collage student is monitoring all of your key strokes, and spaning the internet through your machine, which is why a lot of machines with Norton run so slow.

Well, in spite of RTI's typical delusional posting, in this instance about how Norton is often "turned into a big Trojan" I'd going to give a huge should out here for the CURRENT VERSION of Norton AntiVirus. I used to absolutely despise Norton as it was very intrusive and a huge memory hog. I then read Daniel Tonks talking about how good the current version is and did a little research and decided to give it a try.

First off you literally don't even know it's running it is so lightweight and they have a neat litte meter that shows cpu usage. The interface is also quite good. overall I prefer it to eset which is what I used in the past. Highly recommended. You can also but a 5-user pack for only $89. And if you do a search on "coupon codes" on Google and look up current codes, should should be able to save about 20% on whichever version you buy.

I've been using Nod32 for several years because of its low overhead.

Why do you prefer the new Norton over ESET's Nod32? Does it do a better job with virus protection?

Hi Dawn,

I just like it better but I don't know that it is any better. I find it even less intrusive than ESET. You literally just don't know it's there. And I prefer the interface. With eset now and then I would get little irritating warning messages like "warning your computer is in danger and needs to be updated". Even though the windows updates had just become available and or even if I had applied them. Nothing major, but irritants. So far Norton just sits there doing its job.

Re: your question I have no idea if it does a better job of virus protection, from what I read it is near the top, but of course every anti-virus manufacturer claims they have the best virus catching ability and they all have some study to prove it...

I’m not delusional, I only post what I know from absolute concrete experience, your life is subject to different experiences than mine, this does not invalidate what I know or what you know, we just have a different way of approaching things. I have been working with computers since the late 70's so I have see a lot of issue come and go.

Norton for example, if one stays on top of the updates and does not download tons of what could be considered bootleg offerings, then it can be an OK form of protection against threats, but from my experience if you want to buy some thing that works off the shelf at the local office depot, go with web root internet essentials, its a better program with a smaller foot print on your resources.

You can also simply download Microsoft security essentials if you don’t want to spend any money at all.

Combofix is the tool of choice for many pc techs (although they won’t tell you this) for getting rid of things that just won’t go away

Malwarebytes is also very effective.

I just feel that Norton is extremely overpriced for what you get.

I use Malwarebytes in addition to Nod32. Very easy to use and great for those times when you need a quick scan.

A few years later... what do you like best? They all seem to change for the worse over time. Norton used to be easy peasy... then got bloated. I used AVG on my desktop, now it slows it down incredibly. I'm ready for the newest opinion set.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I don't use anything on my PC.
On other PCs that I do control I just run the Free MS app, I think it's called Essentials or something of that sorts.

On Windows 7, Vista, and XP it's call Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), a free download from Microsoft. Virus and spyware definition updates are pushed out as regular Windows updates which I like. MSE is not compatible with Windows 8 however, not that I'll ever own a system running Windows 8. Under Windows 8 MSE has been replaced with an improved version of Windows Defender which provides the same level of protection as MSE and comes with the operating system.

Started a few years ago, and am still using ESET's Nod32 here.

Have never got a virus while using it.

Can't say the same for Norton.

Other family members, using AVG, Norton and some other "free" garbage virus protection, have had their PC's/Laptops infected so bad they just about had to be scrapped....

Believe I'll stay with ESET....

I ran Nod32 with windows XP and it was great. No noticeable slowdown with operation. That was years ago though. These days i install Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and seems to work. To be fair though i don't stray to far from the light in terms of the websites i visit. My sister has managed to circumvent MSE and get her computer infected multiple times.
