Did it maybe started with the built-in command for the scroll wheel?
Earlier you had to do your own script if I'm correct.

In my opinion it could be a hardware problem that occurs when the firmware was updated. I have had that experiences several times as a computer technician.
Mostly more occurring in the past though.
