 yep, that is probably the case with this amp.  

you could use a smart power strip to kill power to the amp when not in use

I havent used one, but the way I understand them to work, is that you take your main device, such as an A/V receiver, and plug that into the sensing port. When the strip senses that you turned on the A/V receiver, it applies power to the rest of the strip. So you could have the Adcom amp turn on when the A/V receiver turns on, and turn off when the A/V receiver turns off.
