I would like my Denon 3802 to always default to Dolby not DTS for watching movies. I would then have the option to set DTS. The reason for this is that when the recever turns on and defaults to DTS format no sound comes out. This requires the wife to call me and fix it.

I am trying to set the reciever to "Auto" and let it default to the correct format, but have not had any success.

Is there some way for a macro to tell the Denon to set Dolby/PLII when I want to watch movies?

You say it always defaults to DTS on power up, then what steps do you do to make it go to Dolby? Couldn't those steps be put in a power up macro for the Denon receiver!!!

Archer,

"Couldn't those steps be put in a power up macro for the Denon receiver!!!"

That is what I am trying to do. Seems like the receiver has only one button for Dolby and DTS surround modes. It is labeled something Like"DD/DTS" if I remember correctly. It seems to be a toggle, not descrete inputs for DD and DTS, or any surround mode for that matter. For instance, there is not a button that says, "NEO 6" or "DTS-EX".

Both on the remote and the receiver itself, there is a button for "Auto". This supposedly sets the receiver to decode the incoming signal. Or at least that is how I understand it. So I thought that if in the macro I program "Auto", the receiver should default to the incoming signal. The problem I have is that it often sets to DTS and the DVD is in DD.

I assume I am missing something with respect to the Denon and not setting something correctly. Or that the 5 sec delay I have for the receiver to recognize the incoming signal is too short. Or the incoming signal at the beginning of the DVD is not DD. Just not sure what the problem is.

I have a 4802 and setting input mode to auto just allows it to automatically select the input mode -- DD/DTS bitstream, PCM or analog. It also remembers the last decoding mode which was selected on a given input -- Neo:6 movie or cinema or DPL II movie or cinema.

I just set my music inputs to DPL II music and my video to Neo:6 cinema and everything works fine. Don't know how the 3802 works.

OK Guys,

Yes the receiver keeps the last input. So if I listen to "Direct" it stays direct.

What I would like to happen is to tell the receiver to play DD or PLII every time you press "Play DVD" on the main menu.

Here is what I have tried

Link to receiver - Main
Link to DVD - Power - On
Link to Scalar - Power - on
Link to Projector - Power - On
Delay 2.0 sec
Link to receiver - Main - Auto
Delay 10 sec
Link to receiver Main - DVD
Link to receiver - "Dolby Digital/DTS"
Link to DVD - Eject
Jump to DVD - Cursor

Any thoughts on how to make the receiver learn Dolby Digital versus DTS?

John, I am not sure other than this how to set inputs.

Thanks,

Mark

Have you tried hitting another surround mode first, then hitting the DD/DTS button? I think it worked on some Denons where I hit "Stereo" first, then "DD/DTS". It defaulted to Dolby first, so I had some control.

On mine hitting "input mode" scrolls through the various input types. The 4802 has a dedicated analog key on the remote (you might try stealing the code from a 4802 CCF) puts the receiver into analog input mode. Then hitting the "input mode" button places it in auto mode. Auto selects DD/DTS based on the input stream type or it selects PCM or analog and uses the last mode you had set for that input -- stereo, direct, PL II, Neo:6 or whatever.

Thanks John,

You are right about the input modes. I had not had the requirement to page through them before. I took that line out and am relying on the "last used input" to set the surround mode. The reason I was using the input mode is that I was using "ext in" for analog multichannel from the CD player.

Thanks again for helping me out.

Mark
