Greg,
I disagree.

A true wholesaler is not excluded from selling to the public, it's just most of his sales are wholesale.
The electric store I purchase from, many of the electronic catalog companies who aren't (and some who are) on the 'net. Most don't ask, and don't care, if I'm going to retail the item or use it myself.
And I've gotten support from most of those companies.

On the other hand, if Worthington's can sell for $231.07 wholesale, they should be able to sell for a reasonable price on their retail side.

I understand profit and overhead, as I've been in retail most of the last 25 years.

This thread is starting to become s semantics argument. :)

Do you want to pay an additional $300 for a warrantee?

I posted this in "the other" Worthington's thread but never got an answer. The discussion of warantees should be a moot point.

What does the Mx-700's warantee say about terms and conditions? The warantee on my 500 (page 50 something in the manual) is very clear, and there is no mention of purchasing from an "authorized dealer". U.S. law requires any conditions be spelled out on the warantee itself. So what does the warantee say?

As far as I can tell, the warranty says NOTHING regarding price or where purchased. (At least the one their website in the Quickstart *.pdf file.

I haven't seen a manual (yet). :)

I'd post the one from the website here, except the *.pdf file is locked against copying, etc.

The manual that comes with the MX-700 does not specify any restrictions on purchases from "authorized dealers". It's a one year warranty from date of purchase, and only excludes products bought "as-is" and defects due to misuse.

Dave -

You're right about the semantics argument. However, there is a clear legal distinction between a "distributor" and a "reseller". The distributor is an agent of the manufacturer, and as such, gets to purchase the product at a price that's lower than what any reseller could purchase it for. Since that would give him an unfair advantage over a reseller should he decide to sell it to the public, he is prohibited from doing so. That's why a distributor must require a customer to have a reseller's permit prior to sale. The "wholesalers" you mention do not legally have the ability (other than quantity discount purchases) to obtain products at a price that's lower than permitted resellers.

It's pretty clear from all the previous posts that Worthington (as a distributor) was selling to the public at a price that required a reseller's permit to obtain, and were subsequently legally required to discontinue that practice.

That being said, HTM has every right to restrict the sales of their product (to "authorized" resellers), but their current policies (whatever they are) just engender distrust among their customers.

When I bought my MX-700 a few months ago, I didn't know there were any restrictions on who I bought it from; and to this date, I don't know for sure that there are any today.

HTM, how about posting a sales and warranty policy, whatever it is?

The real question is: Did you have to pretend to be a reseller to make the purchase?

I just recieved my invoice from Worthington indicating that a MX-700 has been shipped to my home.

Oh no, I thought they were not going to honor my order, so I already purchased another one. Guess I'll have to figure out who will get one for Christmas.

Just tried to order an MX-700. The lady I talked to said that as of yesterday they're requiring a business card or letterhead showing proof of being a dealer or installer. Wouldn't sell it to me without that supporting documentation. Looks like the door's closed on this deal! Anyone know a way around this, short of creating a bogus letterhead? Wonder if they'd also ask for a tax ID number after you provide a letterhead or business card?

I didn't pretend anything. I called and ordered some switches and the remote and that was it!.

Good! Fair is fair, IMHO!!! And I hope they ask for whatever is needed to show that the buyer has a legitimate business, and not just a letterhead that anyone can make up on their computer.

Bogus letterhead? Do we have no values left at all?
