Just wanted to confirm for others that after updating to the latest 4.4/1.4 firmware, I am no longer seeing the sporadic loss of connection to the RF extender. So far it's been a week and it hasn't dropped it once. Previously, it would drop it every 30-40 commands.

It still appears that the media button does not send any commands through RF even with the 4.4 and 1.4 firmwares. Is this the case for everyone else as well?

This a great thread, and I thought it would help me connect the 890 to the extender but to no avail. I've tried everything.

Any other tricks available here? What I get is the remote wants to try to connect and can't find it, then it finds it on the second try (which isn't really when it wants to partner with it), but then when it tries to partner it can't. This goes on indefinitely.

I did the process paulv posted. Any other advice? So frustrating....

TIA! Mike

Well spent an hour on the phone with level 2 support and we were unable to get the remote working so Logitech is shipping me a new remote.

unfortunate but hopefully the new remote will solve the problem.

The latest firmware for the extender/remote may help this problem. I have versions 4.6 for the remote and 2.2 for the extender if anyone needs them. Just send me an email and I'll get them to you. Good Luck!!

Thanks for sending over the firmware! Unfortunately it did not solve the problem :( The remote and RF extender still refuse to pair up.

The "first" time through the connection loop is different than the rest because i believe it will pair up if it is able to without doing the "Press connect again" prompt.

If the first time fails the remote wants to check to see if it can even sense the RF extender (Hence the different prompt of : To check RF press connect button on RF Extender: Wireless Extender vs. Press connect button on RF Extender until status LED light turns on which is displayed the first time before any failures occur).

Hopefully Logitech gets back with me early next week about shipping a replacement.

Hello soundworld. Can you please send me ver 4.6 (remote) and 2.2 for extender, thank you! I had 3 extenders that were not working properly, 1st extender worked for about 4 days, 2nd extender, i pressed and hold connect to get status light come and communicate with remote, it comes on for 2 seconds then turns off, 3rd extender as soon i plugged it in the power outlet all the 3 led lights came on!

I had the exact same problem. I called tech support and they walked me through it. What I had to do was go to the connectivity link on the software Home Page and remove the remote and the RF extender. Then I had to connect the remote using the USB cord, adding it back in and renaming it "REMOTE." DO NOT UPDATE THE REOMTE YET!!! Then do the same thing with RF extender, clicking the ADD button and naming it "EXTENDER." After that, you go back to the Home Page. This is when you'll update the remotes starting with the EXTENDER. After you update the REMOTE, follow the directions on the LCD.

P.S. Use the firmware from the website. I had to backdown my firmware after an upgrade. The new firmware is a Beta copy!!!!!!!

I had high hopes for this, but I still can't pair with the Extender, even though it finds it fine... I really need to call Logitech, but I am dreading having to walk through all this with them.

I am having the same problem. I just pursched my Harmony 890 remote on 7/22/2007. It worked the first time I went through the setup using the Harmony Remote Software 7.3.2. However, I went in to the device settings in the software to customize a button. It asked for me to update the remote and the extender. The two haven't been able to sync since. I have updated the firmware on the extender to 2.4, and on the remote to 4.7. That didn't allow the remote to talk to the extender either. I tried booting both the extender and the remote up in safe mode as suggested in this forum and doing the firmware updates, software updates, and reconnecting. That didn't work either. Ugh. I am beginning to think that Logitech jumped the gun with this unit. It is a piece of crap IMHO. I called the Logitech support line, the 1st line was unsuccessful at getting the unit to work. Just a bunch of updating the firmware and updating the units individually again to no use. I was then sent to the second line in Toronto. They had me go back through the same stuff the 1st line did of updating the firmware and such. They then removed the remotes from my account and had me add them back. Nothing worked. I am supposedly going to be receiving an e-mail within 5 days from the warranty department. Apparently, they think I have a defective unit. Can you believe it, I am supposed to wait 5 days to get an e-mail! What a joke. I may never buy anything Logitech again after this mess. $300+ piece of crap sitting on my coffee table right now. :-(

Any suggestions on other things that I can try that may have worked for you?

I've had this issue with several remotes in the past. I received the following procedure from a Tier 2 tech. It has worked for me in most every case. I hope it works for you.

1. Reset RF Extender - Hold connect, plug extender into the USB Cable, once
plugged in keep holding down connect until the "RF" light begins to flash.
The RF light & the Status light should now be blinking at the same time.
Unplug the extender from the power outlet

2. Remove the Extender & the Remote from the account

3. Remote Safe Mode Firmware - Take the battery out of the remote, hold down
the "Off" button and plug USB cable in. When "Safe Mode Requested"
appears on the screen, let go of "Off"

4. Click on Downloads, select "Firmware" and click "Next", run through the
firmware upgrade for the remote

5. Once firmware is complete, click on "Next" and run through the connectivity
check

6. After connectivity is confirmed, the software will prompt you to update,
select "No"

7. Unplug the remote from the USB and put the battery back in the remote.

8. Extender in Safe Mode Firmware - Hold down the "connect" button and plug
the extender into the USB cable. Keep holding down connect until the "RF"
light begins to blink, the RF & status light should be blinking between each
other.

9. Upgrade the firmware on the extender. At 100%, the software will prompt you
to unplug the extender from the USB cable, plug it back in and then click on
"Next".

10. Once the connectivity check is complete, the software will once again
prompt you to update the remote, select "No".

11. You will now see that the remote & extender are re-added to the account,
click on "Control Devices" to select whether the devices are controlled with
the extender or the remote.

12. Once complete, change the "Theme" of the 890 remote. If the theme is set
to "Default", change it to "No icons" for example. Save the changes and then
go back into the "Themes" and change it to "Harmony Uppercase". Save.

13. Click on "Update Remote", you are looking for the software to prompt you
to plug the "remote" into the USB cable first, and then update the extender &
the remote.

14. After the update is complete, you want the remote to prompt you through
the remote & extender pairing

15. Once paired, the remote & extender should communicate properly once again.

I also had issues and just wanted to add the following comment that a tier 2 tech made. Once you have a setup fail you should always try following ones in safe mode. So if you try changing network settings etc. etc. it's perhaps a better bet to keep it in safe mode whilst doing so.

I am also having a RF problem. I'm a newbie so please take it easy on me. I had my Harmony 890 working fine with my RF and I wanted to add an activity on the remote. After the Harmony software updated (7.3.2, I believe), I attempted to update the remote and RF Extender. When updating the Extender I received a message that I could not communicate with the Extender to update it. I removed the Extender from my account and attempted to update. The update was supposedly successful but the RF does not work at all now. The Remote says that its connected to the RF but still nothing happens. I attempted to follow JCBREMOTES's instructions above but I cant even get my Extender to go into safe mode. I hold the Connect button, RF stays lit, Status blinks and nothing else happens. Any advice would be appreciated in advance. Thanks.
