Not picking on you, but you did think that the 100$ HD DVD price point was going to mean a lot of HD DVDs being sold in the last quarter. Since the previous quarter HD DVD had 54% (if I remember correctly) can you explain this slide created by Toshiba

Bad speculation I guess.

I'm not seeing your slide though, so I don't really know what you're referring to.

Also...a real $100 price would have made things different (vs $200).

that slide has nothing to do with dvd sales. its a year to date report on dvd player sales for the week ended 12/22/2007. We would however need toshiba to define WTF "next generation DVD players" actually is. Does it actually mean DVD players OR HD DVD players OR any HD disc including BluRay OR all HD and SD formatted disc players.

Slide seems to be nothing more than marketing material from my viewpoint

what do you take from it?

It looks like a snapsot of a slide being shown during a presentation somewhere. It clearly states "Next Generation DVD Brand Share" Below it says "YTD" which usually means Year To Date", wth the date being 12/22/07.

Next generation is clearly HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Players. The slide implies (don't know how truthful or accurate) that Toshiba sold 49.3% of all HD players sold in 2007.

Of course that leaves 50.7%. Some of that will include combination players that play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray (LG?). No Microsoft listed, so I'll assume no game machine sales were included.

It looks like a wash to me. Each side getting "about" half the sales. Toshiba wins for individual brand share, but that's literaly only half the story in that slide.

MHO.

The slide was from Toshibas Press conference at CES and is for HD players (BD/HD DVD)

Obviously Toshiba put as positive a spin as possible (we sold more players then any other manufacturer)

The reason I added it here with this particular title was that OTAHD started this thread when Walmart, BB and Amazon had the 99$ sale on the A2s (in early Nov.). He also said that he thought at that price point many HD DVD players would be sold and that would eventually offset the disk sales

I just found it interesting that not only the give away was not enough to increase the SAP difference (in order to narrow the disk difference), not only was it not enough to keep the margins it had at the end of Q3 (54% for HD DVD) but not even enough to keep HD DVD>50% (which means that in Q4 more SAP BD players where sold then HD DVD)

DBrown: LG is in the slide look at the legend, it is the thin light blue slice beside the Toshiba at the top

OEX: I think everyone knows HD DVD disk sales don’t compare to BD (which is why WB gave up on it). But the latest public numbers are
(for week ending Dec 23)
64% YTD and 62% SI in favour of BD.

I think it would have turned out differently if $100 was a price used at numerous stores for an extended period of time (not one or two stores for one day).

I know I was eyeing the Future Shop boxing day HD-DVD sale up here in Canada... HD-D3 for $100 (we still have horrible electronics pricing up here so that was a good deal). So guess how many they had at that price for their online site? 400. For the whole country.

Right now the cheapest HD-DVD player you can get at Best Buy Canada is $350 (HD-A3), or $400 for a PS3, or $450 for a standalone BD player (BDP-S300 or BD-P1400).

it was not only a day or two and it was not only a few stores, it was at a few major chains and on line.

The issue was that 100$ was an insane price and Toshiba was losing a lot on each player that was sold, especialy when you consider the 5-10 free movies that came with it.

Toshiba could not afford to give away much more money. The whole plan was to con people into thinking it was still viable so that people would buy the more expensive players and then buy movies. Unfortunately for them they only sold a few and most of them (looking at posts on different boards) where to people who already had HD DVD players who thought 100$ for 10 movies is a good price.

Wow...no wonder we're getting so many Canadians coming here to shop.

The A3 is $200 here I think. Five years ago $350 may have been only slightly higher in Canadian dollars...now your stuff is worth more than ours.

How long before the peso overtakes the American dollar?

well the CAD is back bellow the USD but yes, the incredible rise in the CAD (or to be precise fall of USD) has destroyed the pricing here because prices have not moved as fast as the change in currency value.
