I think it would have turned out differently if $100 was a price used at numerous stores for an extended period of time (not one or two stores for one day).
it was not only a day or two and it was not only a few stores, it was at a few major chains and on line.
The issue was that 100$ was an insane price and Toshiba was losing a lot on each player that was sold, especialy when you consider the 5-10 free movies that came with it.
Toshiba could not afford to give away much more money. The whole plan was to con people into thinking it was still viable so that people would buy the more expensive players and then buy movies. Unfortunately for them they only sold a few and most of them (looking at posts on different boards) where to people who already had HD DVD players who thought 100$ for 10 movies is a good price.
