5.1 but what current TVs output more than 2ch via their optical?
Sammy - no
Panny - i'ver heard both yes and no - model dependent
Sharp - no

So you put in the play3s and get what out of them when the signal is only stereo?

If your Sonos rep sent you the dealer marketing guidelines, there's a list of recommended TV's for demoing Sonos for that very reason.

I just noticed that as well and then if you add a sub for 5.1 what comes out of it
Kind of confused now

when that thread came up a few weeks ago asking about samsungs and 5.1 optical output it brought to light that this is bullshit. they must be using a "virtual" surround sound program if it doesn't get it Dolby.

You could go directly from the cable box or blu-ray but that would make it so you would only have one source attached to the sound bar. This is becoming evident that this is only a secondary room unless we use a solution like this [Link: ambery.com], pretty much guarantees that a control system of some sort has to be present. I wonder how that switcher works?

I assume you mean the power plug will not quite recess enough to be flush with the speaker? I think a right angle plug would do the trick. The cord only needs to be a foot long or so. It seems difficult to find such a cord though. Might have to custom build those too. :)

A recessed outlet will take care of the plug.

The right outlet, or more specifically, the right wall plate around it will determine how flush the sound bar sits against the wall.

No worries. It's custom anyway. Don't be such a wimp.

What about a brick wall :)

You never heard of a chisel? You drag like 800 square feet of storage space behind your truck, surely you have one there ;)

You don't have to cut out a 'box' into the bracket. Just cut off either end leaving a void in the middle for the power and signal cables. The included template will help line everything up, 4 screws and you're good (as long as the studs co-operate)

One thing I would like to see is a SONOS wireless 2 ch. amplifier. Using the PLAY:3 as surround speakers is fine if you have a place and a plug where you need them to go. If not, then what? Having a SONOS amplifier that can go anywhere and connect to standard speakers would be bada$$.

I've wall mounted a couple pairs of Play3's and it's a big pain in the ass. If you buy short power cords and place the power outlet just right you can pretty much hide the power outlet in many instances. That being said, some brain damaged individual put the mounting threads off-center which makes if even harder to mount horizontally - granted, they were making room for the back firing driver....

Not sure if this is the right thread but I am sorely disappointed.

No HDMI inputs (needed to eliminate the optical out issue)?
No on screen GUI (a ton of work but would have cool)
Drivers that fire at 45 degrees

It for volume is cool (read required) but no quick IR commands to play music or favorites or anything else sucks.

Not very impressed with this one.

There has been a lot of chatter about the lack of DTS support, and how do you get 5.1 if your TV sends only 2 ch. PCM out its toslink output. The main thing I want to know is what kind of surround processing are they are using to create a 5.1 signal out of the 2 ch. incoming signal. Are they using DPLII? Something proprietary? Are are you stuck listening in 2 ch. stereo, regardless of whether you have the PLAY:3 connected as surrounds?

Obviously this product is designed for SONOS customers who want better sound than what comes stock in their flat panel TV AND want to be able to have a SONOS zone in the same location. This, it will accomplish, and probably very well. It is not meant as a replacement for an AVR, an LCR soundbar, a subwoofer, and surround speakers. It should, however sound better than most other powered soundbar options, especially in the same price range.

I did find out why the CONNECT:AMP is not supported for surround applications with the playbar. Apparently they use the 5GHz band for that....and the playbar, SUB, and PLAY:3 are the only SONOS products with a 5GHz radio. Now, my question is would it work ok if you had the CONNECT:AMP hardwired with ethernet? Of course then they have to issue a disclaimer and likely answer tech support calls about how someone who cannot read well thought they could use the CONNECT:AMP wirelessly. :) But surely it is possible.

I just want to hear it on the wall above and below a TV to see how the angled baffle works. They are not the first to use "odd" speaker angles to create sound. Mirage comes to mind. There are lots of others, so we should not count it as a folly just yet. :)

I plan to get one and mount it on my wall with a power outlet behind it as per code. :P Just to say I did it once. Bwahahaha!!

I hear ya. I guess I was hoping for more. It will do the job but I doubt I spec it as a surround system .
