I would look at the possibility of using some of the existing wire within the home, as suggested by Ernie Bornn-Gilman on 02/11/04. I just Retro installed a ZR-8630 with the spare 3 conductors in the phone systems wiring, now it did mean that the keypads ended up in odd locations(next to the nightstand, above the counter in the galley, etc. etc.)but it works. If you contact me or any of the other guy's here in Tech Support at Niles, yes we could explain to you how to make the Keypads run on 3 conductors or even a 2 cond sheilded !!
Peace!!

Shaster, I appreciate the input...but we need it to go one step further, as we need LCD keypads...

It'a rapidly becoming a, "you need an expensive retro-rewire" situation!

Hire an unemployed cable installer. He'll show up with his 18" drill bit and your problem will be solved!

It would be super cool if someone made wifi keypads for control...and you could just gang together with switches for power.

Billion dollar idea...it's mine!!!!!!!!!!!

So avdude... whats the final?

I've been to two houses today... both with that wonderful electrician status quo 18/4 to 2 18/2s. The one I opened up had 7 4 conductors with like colors wire-nutted together behind the plate. I don't often say this but ther really is NO way to get wires to the VCs for control without major drywall repair and some of the areas are venetian plaster.

God it pisses me off that people in charge of wiring a 2 million dollar house are so f-----g inept. I know... sell yourself to he builder... yada yada yada. I've talked, mailed, lunched these guys till the cows come home but when sparky gives away the low voltage I've got to walk away and let the chips fall where they may?

Anyway... can you mail me with your experience with Matrix. looks like its this or a wireless IP automation system (unfortunately way out of budget for this client... guess the house killed the wallet for now)

I would go with MX800 remotes and your favorite multizone controller. He can upgrade to LCDs and wireless broadband video throughout the house in another year or two when all this silly wiring stuff goes away. Plus if you are controlling any TV receivers (Tivo, PVRs, etc. - the MX800 is way better than an Pronto, not nearly as flexible, but way more user friendly - I have a pile of both and don't touch the Pronto's anymore.)

By the way, the MusiCast sytem looks pretty cool, except like all the other A/V companies stuff, doesn't integrate in any way to your computer network (and none of the computer background companies can make a UI that works - although the PhatNoise home player is very cool and you can take the same cartridge from your house to your car...)

Zon... won't work
over regular 16/4 speaker wire. It has to be
twisted pair. I didn't really understand the
whole thing, but I think that it is an impedance
issue...

It is not impedance. Instead, the twisting acts as a virtual shield, nullifying induced signals so that noise is not picked up. Also, the more twisty, the higher the frequency response. Compare CAT3, or garden variety inside wire, with CAT5; the main difference is the amount of twist and regularity of the twist.

Speaker wire is usually incidentally twisted, not enough to help.

But again, if they want twisted pair, are any phone wires in the room unused?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie,

Like I said, I don't know the details, I was just spoutin' what the guys told me at the ZON booth in Long Beach...

I do understand the theory behind the twisted pair and the noise/inductance. I was looking at the specs for the type of wire that they recommend (Belden 8719), and it has a listed impedance (65 Ohm). If you look at a normal 16/4 speaker cable on the same site (such as Belden 5202UE, for example) it does not have a listed impedance.

After I saw that, I thought that maybe some of what they said might have some credence. But, I am by no means an engineer. I don't even own a train...

I appreciate all the help that I can get.

Thanks.
