I have always heard and called it "Lamp Wire"

That was only while you wore the lampshade.

That's because zip cord, 18-2 sPT-2 to be exact, is usually used as lamp wire. Lamp wire's a pretty good name, too.

It's just vocabulary and what you're used to calling things. If you haven't heard this one before, check it out at [Link: rickwalton.com]

That very night the servant woke her master up in a fright and said: "Master of all Masters, get out of your barnacle and put on your squibs and crackers. For white-faced simminy has got a spark of hot cockalorum on its tail, and unless you get some pondalorum, High Topper Mountain will be all on hot cockalorum!"
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

you know, as funny as this thread is, and as one poster even asked for a refund after reading it, i gotta say:
i have been doing this for almost a decade and i admit i never thought about the fact that 100W into 8Ohms means 28.28V, and that if you have a 140W amp powering 8Ohm speakers, you need CL3 rated speaker wire to be code compliant. Honestly, how many people here make that distinction between amps of different power?

i realize my experience is relatively limed, especially compared to many posters here, but how many of you have ever seen or heard of an inspector checking the impedance and power of a low voltage installation?  i'm sure it's happened, but in the real world i don't think it happens 1% of the time, at least in the world of residential av.

Yes, I can only hope that I have good, fresh, toxic-free air to breathe next time I'm HANGING OUT in a burning building.

It can be burning, or more importantly, smoldering, in the plenum and you may never know it until you wake up dead.

I know. Thats why i quoted it. 50 posts and no one has been able to completely finish this sentence.

"You cant install lamp cord aka ZipCord in walls or ceilings because_____"

NEC 400.8 (2008 code) Uses not permitted: Unless specifically permitted in 400.7, flexible cords and cable shall not be used for the following:
(1) As a substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure
(2) Where run through holes in walls, structural ceilings, suspended ceilings, dropped ceilings, or floors
(3) Where run through doorways, windows, or similar openings
(4) Where attached to building structures.

I didn't have any zipcord, but I looked at a cheap extension cord that I had that is essentially zipcord with ends on it, and it is stamped SPT-2. The trade name is plastic parallel cord and the uses are for refrigerators, room air conditioners and as permitted in 422.16(B) which covers waste disposers, and other appliances. It is basically the plastic cord you see on most everything. (Don't get picky about that description) It is rated for damp and wet locations and not hard usage.

So regardless of voltage etc, the NEC tells you where that cord/cable is allowed to be used.

I think you are going to find that even though LV has been overlooked in the past, the AHJ's etc are going to start looking closer at what is being installed in homes and businesses.

It didn't occur to me to look at an actual lamp cord until your post. I just dug out a brown extension cord and its also stamped SPT-2. Now my girlfriend is wondering why im going around the house looking at all the lamps :).

Yes. My confusion was based on the terminology being used incorrectly throughout the thread. All of the responses were like this.

"you cant use it because its not this" or "this section of that says its not to be used here" etc. There wasn't a complete sentence that said :

This is what its called.

This is why its not allowed.

This is where that rule is covered in the NEC.

Your post did that, thanks. But no mention of CL-2, CL-3, Plenum etc. Everyone responding to this thread was SURE they had the answer so....

Im going to assume that the NEC can cover a specific cables usage in multiple ways and stick to my "because i said so" response to anyone who asks me.

Why can't 39 cent use kite string as a flat panel bracket?

Because 39 Cent is not 2nd Rick.

Adding this....

It appears that samsung does not agree with us.
