Strengths:Big screen, customizable buttons
Weaknesses:Dim screen, PC software
Review:I have been trying to update my RC-8000 to v3.13 for DAYS. The updater continually locks up around 40%, freezing the PC app and the remote. I can kill the app, and reset the remote, and it shows v3.13 in the info-screen, but it will neither upload nor download data from the PC.

Strengths:Ability to customize the screens manually
Weaknesses:Inability to learn commands from some remotes
Lack of extensive database in supported components
Complete inability to capture the full programmable capabilities of the remote
Unwillingness of Denon to support the remote provided with a $4000 receiver
Review:One of the reasons I bought the Denon 5803 "flagship" receiver was the advertised capabilities of the RC8000 that was included with the receiver. This was a big mistake. Although I can download the software from the remote to my computer and completely customize it the way I want it to work, it has been impossible to get the modified program back into the remote. Numerous inquiries on this forum and the web have not resulted in a solution that will work. Without this capability, the remote is just an expensive learning remote. If you want to do something simple with your remote, it's OK. If you want a programmable remote, forget it. Crush it in a vice early and avoid the frustration.

Strengths:Programable macros, great concept, durable
Weaknesses:Worst support for any product I've ever seen. Very expensive item given the fact that no effort is made by Denon to keep the programing software current. Most people who purchase this product will throw it away in favor of a similar remote with more flexable programing via computer.
Review:This is the perfect example of a good concept design with no effort to keep pace or update the product to reflect competitors advances. It's like Denon spent a fortune developing it, then fired the whole staff that know anything about it, but will continue to flog it until thier supply runs out.
It obviously has upgradeable firmware. I am puzzled therefore, why they would not release updates to make the screen more customizable. I'm also puzzled why they would not upgrade their programing software so that it would at least work with Windows 2000. The real power of the remote can only by accomplished with such programing.
As to the earlier post about getting programing to work with windows 2000, I have stumbled upon an easier method. I discovered that if you create your new configuration file, either from scratch, or from an upload from the remote, make all your changes and save it, it is then imposible to download it to the remote... it just keeps freezing. If, however, you then reboot the computer in safe mode, then reopen the program and the saved file, you can then download the new configuration without problems. Rediculous I know, but If I hadn't discovered that, this remote would have been in the garbage and I would have been shelling out for a Pronto.
I hope this help someone else.

Strengths:Easy to learn, program, customize, etc.
Lighted LCD panel for HT usage. Utilize for up to 23 devices.
Weaknesses:I have to wear glasses to see it - either it's too small, or I'm getting too old... :-)
Review:I agree with Frank, the previous poster. Many of these posts contain negative feedback, likely because they didn't take time to figure out how to use this great remote. I received this remote with my Denon AVR4802, and it is awesome!

I'm only beginning to realize it's full potential. I use this exclusively for ALL my AV/HT gear - receiver, DVD, VHS, Cable TV digital box, TV, HT projector, and dimmer lights. ONE REMOTE covers everything.

Review 30 made on Sunday November 23, 2003 at 6:34 PM.
Strengths:Pre-programmed functions work well
Weaknesses:Programming the RC-8000 is difficult. On-line editor available from Denon website does not work -- it hangs up when downloading back to the RC-8000. Denon provides no support.
Review:It is unacceptable that a company such as Denon would put out a defective product (the RC-8000 editor), but not support it or fix it.

Also, Denon will not help find/load IR codes for devices that are not pre-programmed (e.g. my digital cable box from Comcast), with the result that I cannot switch channels via the buttons on the remote unit.

E-mails to Denon remain unanswered. Web site does not provide any other way to contact them.

I don't care how good there equipment is --given my experience I would not buy their stuff again.
