Ok, so I have a remote controlled ceiling fan... just the crap you buy at Lowes to convert a normal one. Anyways is there anything I can buy or make (I'm not an electrical engineer but I can solder) that would allow a universal remote be able to control the light and fan speed.

Lutron has dimmers and fan control, check them out should work fine, make sure to look at the ones that have IR control

Lutron Maestro IR will do the trick. I've used them before and they are solid.
