Purchased a Sony av3000 remote,,,I am currently considering purchasing several x10 dimmers,,,I know I need to purchase the ir543,,,my questions is, I am going to have 6 different zones/rooms and am interested in dimming and turning off individual zones and turn all off and all on at times via the av3000,,,will the ir543 and av3000 remote be able to tackle 6 different rooms,,,my remote will be only in the main room with the ir543 in the same room,,,I really like the idea of turning off one zone and leaving another area on or turn them all off when I hit the sack,,,Thanks, Scott

surffish,
I use the Sony AV-3100 and IR543 and find it works very nicely. All my X-10 devices are all on the same house code. Keep in mind that the AV remote doesn't send any house codes, only unit codes. The IR543 sends the house codes. You setup the house codes via the red wheel on the IR543. So if your zones are all on the same house code then as long as your signals reach their intended devices properly (this is the hard part) it should work. I'm fairly new at this myself so if I stated something incorrectly or there are better ways someone else on the forum will help.

Right now my setup is as follows. My AV-3100 and IR543 are in my family room (which is my home theater). I control recessed lights that are on 2 seperate circuits, same phase (circuits not phases) for this room via the remote. I also control the recessed lights that are in another room, the playroom. Again, different circuit, same phase. I also control 3 outdoor floodlights, different phase, different circuits. I'm in the process of adding more.

As I said, the only factor will be getting the X-10 signals sent properly and strong enough. I ran into some problems and with a little testing and the additions of noise filters I was able to be successful.

One thing you might want to do on the Sony remote is if you have a system button or component button you're not using, you might want to copy over the lighting controls onto it. I found accessing the lighting controls via the "Other" button not convienent at all.

surffish,
you're going to have a little problem. It's with the IR543 as it can only control device numbers 1-4 at the same time without having to physically slide a switch. Sorry. The only way around this is if you are willing to put a couple of your different zones on the same device code.

Example: if you designate say zones 1 & 2 to device code #1 and zones 3 & 4 to device code #2. Now your IR543 is only controlling 4 devices at the same time. Again, if I'm wrong or as nother member on the forum knows a better way, they help.

The IR543 has 4 device buttons at the top, #'s 1-4. These 4 buttons also can control another 4 devices, #'s 5-8 but a little slide switch has to be switched first. So while your AV-3000 has the capability to control at least 12 devices at a time, you're goining to be limited to 4 at a time from the IR543.

Thanks Erock,,,so if I understand this correctly, I can only do a total of two zones on the ir543, 1-4 operate together, and 5-8 operate together,,,none of them operate idvidually via a IR remote,,,and I still need to slide the switch on the ir543 just to change between the 2 zones then go to the remote?,,,anyone have any ideas on how I can have at least 6 independent zones that operate independently and can do it via an universal infared remote and an infared x10 mini controller ? I would really like at least 6 different zones. Thanks

I talked to some one from x10,,,they claim I can use a total of 16 independent light zones, meaning I can turn several off and leave others on (all different circiuts of course) via a universal ir remote through the ir533, like the av3000,,,if you would only use the buttons on the ir533 itself and not a universal remote, your options are more limited, only 8 zones and have to use the slider for 1-4 and 5-8 to change control the lights individually,,,can anyone confirm this?,,,seems to make sense

Yes the remote should be able to send all 16 device codes. If you want to use the manual switches on the IR543 then you are limited to the 8.

surffish,
ELA & the X-10 person is correct! I just tried it with my Sony AV-3100 and IR543. Live and learn. It doesn't matter what the slider switch on the IR543 is set at as long as the IR signal is coming from the Sony remote, the IR543 will convert and send it on. The slider is only needed when using the IR543's own buttons. So yes, your Sony remote will be able to operate all your independant zones with the IR543.

The IR543 will accept all 16 unit codes from a remote the switch on the IR543 setting 1-4 and 5-8 is only for using the buttons on the IR543.

I have never used an AV-3100 but if you can send macros then I would suggest creating a button called living room on and living room off. When you press living room on it would sent the "on command" to units that are in that room, and the same for off (unit 1 on, unit 2 on unit 3 on). There is also a separate ir command for all on and all off, your biggest problem will be noise and jumping phases I would recommend using a phase coupler. Let us know how it goes.
Always Second Best...

I would reccommend getting the Ir543AH. It allows control of 16 unit codes plus all house codes without using a wheel to set just one house code. This allows you to control more than just 16 devices on just one house code.

Do you have a link as to where I could purchase one?  I have been looking for one for the last year.
