I like the NHT SW2-P.
It's not going to grind your bones into powder, but it has a nice rich bass and a crisp punch to it.

I think SVS subs sound great. I don't think you'll find anything close at any of their price points.
I particularly like their powered cylinders. Two friends of mine have their subs, I haven't heard anything as good for as much as 2.5 times what they paid.
Don't yet have one myself... looking to repair that around Christmas :-)

A low-end SVS will knock knick-knacks off your shelves and beat pretty much any sub priced up to $2000. A high-end SVS will....well, your house is well constructed, right? I have a mid-range SV, I try not to let it play 20Hz or lower at over 100db since parts of my house start rattling. Or if you don't care about the money, try something with this driver.... If you want a great sub, try out the Velodyne Digital Drive series. If you are looking for volume, you could always go with Genelec.

Triad makes 2 kinds. In-wall and In-room. In-wall is a 2 part system...amp and sub box that mounts into wall. (Does not use wall as cavity).
Both will knock your socks off

If you want serious subs. EAW or JBL professional make some nice double 18's, but then you need the room for them. EAW makes this double 12 that is phenomenal , but not cheap, and you will need their processor [Link: eaw.com]An excellent choice that is very reasonably priced and will provide limitless bottom end in a home theatre is this one from Mackie [Link: mackie.com]For really decent results use two of these [Link: miragespeakers.com]

Wow, that's pretty impressive for the price. Almost SV territory. Speaking of the Mirage stuff.
Some of you people must have money just laying around.

The biggest baddest sub woofer made. The Parthenon. The ultimate loudspeaker driver. More excursion, more output, higher power handling than any driver on the face of the earth. A true 82mm one way linear stroke (nearly 6.5 inches peak to peak linear), and a radiating surface greater than three 18" subwoofers allows the Parthenon to generate the highest SPL levels ever achieved by a single driver (more output than eighteen high end 18" drivers)...
