My VL900 is about 4 years old. It still works fine, but over the past few months I notice that what used to work at 12 feet now needs to be within about 6 feet. I have recently changed the batteries.

Could my VL900 be dying?

Thanks.

John

Sure, its been known to happen, they don't last forever. Check out eCost.com, sometimes they have factory refurbished vl900 for $17.

Just make sure your original remotes still work as they should - sometimes the IR *receiver* has been known to develop problems (but it is likely just the remote).

That is a good point. It was the performance of my other remotes that got me to think that the VL900 was going bad. The remote with my DirectTVTivo DVR (which can also control my receiver, to some degree) has about twice the range of the VL900 currently. The VL900 has certainly dropped its range over the years.

Thanks,

John

I bought a replacement VL900 yesterday. It solved the range problem.

I was quite happy that I was able to transfer component settings from one to the other - programming the DirectTivo was quite a chore the first time around and I was glad not to have to repeat that effort.

I was less happy to discover that the macros on the component keys themselves needed to be re-programmed. Thankfully, the last time I did this (16 months ago). I had written down my macros!

Glad to hear a new one worked!
