I currently have all my components in a cabinet, I usually sit 12 feet from the cabinet, I perfer to have the cabinet closed but I was wondering if the remote would work if the cabinet was closed? Or would I need something like an IR repeater from radio shack like this. [Link: radioshack.com]

If the doors cabinet are wood, it will not work. IR is light. If the cabinet doors are glass, it should work.
Yes, an IR repeater would work if your remote has no line-of-sight.
