Hello all! Just got my AV3000 (after returning the JBL TC1000 - junk)

Couple of questions
1) I know that you can rename or delete labels (names of components, system control) but is there a way to rename that actual buttons onscreen? Example, I was to create a button to press that says SURROUND. I don't want it to be a label on the bottom of the screen, I want to modify an actual button. If that's possible, how?

2) I tried deleting unnecessary buttons to avoid clutter. some i can't delete though. there is a play and record button that i cannot delete on the STB component. why?

3) I've got a nakamichi tape deck. I believe the way it worked is that there was a stereo mini wire that connected to either the nakamich CD or receiver and thats how the IR commands got to the tape deck. I now have a denon avr1803 receiver and i tried every combination of getting the tape deck to work via IR commands. anyone happen to have/know these components or knows how to get a nakamichi tape deck to work without a nakamichi receiver (and no, sigh, i don't have the original remote !! )

thanks so much
mike

Oh one other thing. I have programed my system control to be macros ie. system 1 = turn tv to video1 + switch to amp and turn to DVD etc...
i was thinking of putting a power on to each device, but i didn't want them to power down if i was already watching TV for example and wanted to switch to DVD.

is there a way to include a power on command, but not to power down if its already on? doubtful i'm guessing..

1. Not possible. You can only rename to what is already there on the square buttons.
2. For the play and record, you have to press them both at once, or press and hold record button and then press play button, or the other way around. Keep trying, it will work.
3. Don’t believe you can operate the Nakamichi deck by remote. Look for an IR receiver in the front with a flashlight (it will be like a small red bulb somewhere behind the plastic cover). Probably none there, so it is likely a wired control from the Nakamichi CD or receiver.

You can program a Power On button for Sony components only and put it into a macro (See page 43 of the manual), so if your equipment is Sony, no problem. Some receivers have separate on/off buttons, so you could learn the on button and put it in a macro. Some DVD’s will turn on when you press the play button, so you could put a Play button in the macro. This would turn them on if they were off, but wouldn’t turn them off when the macro is used. The only other way is with discrete codes, which I will go into if you want to go that way, but it is a little complicated, and requires the use of a OneForAll or Radio shack remote.

thanks for your reply!
The first two issues are resolved -- as for the last, none of my components are Sony so I would like to go a little more in depth with discrete codes, however i'm totally at a loss with them. Are you saying I would need a separate remote?

As with the nak casette, you are right, no ir receiver. I know i was able to control it with just the CD player, but am also at a loss on how? any advice?

thanks again
mike

My favorite subject is discrete codes, so I will try and get you started with some basic information, and then we can add to it as you go along.
You will need a OFA/RS (OneForAll/Radio Shack) remote to use discrete codes. The RS 15-2103 or OFA 8810/8811 (each around $20) will work well. Discrete codes are 3 digit codes, accessible only through OFA/RS remotes. On the remote, you press the P or Setup key, and then the 3 digit code. When the last digit is pressed, a signal is sent to your learning remote with the discrete command. I recommend getting a learning OFA/RS remote, so that you can also use it to move keys on your AV3000 from where they are to where you want them to be.
Go to this site and read through it. www.hifi-remote.com
Here are two shortcuts: click on “Setup Codes”. This will give you the codes for your device that lead to the discrete codes you will be able to use. If there is more than one setup code, note them all. Then, click on “Advanced Code List”. Go to the device you want, then click on the setup code for that device. This will bring you to the discrete codes available. If you had more than one setup code, click on all of them and pick out the one that best gives you the codes you need. The 3 digit codes listed are the discrete codes.
You will have to load the proper device code to a component key on your OFA/RS remote. Make sure it works. Now, you are ready to send discrete codes to your AV3000. Put your AV3000 in Learn mode, then press the P or Setup button, then the three digit code, and the AV3000 will learn the discrete code.
Let me know if you have any more questions as you go along.

Good luck
Ron

Have you looked into the Xantech 794 and 797 interface modules. They will allow you to use the Xantech remote receivers to feed directly into the Nakamichi remote jack. Kind of expensive though.

Regarding discrete codes.. great explanation, thanks for info. went to site, no setup codes for nakamichi products (other than amp).

Looked into Xantech, looks like it will cost about $70.00. I'm guessing there is another way. How can a company create a casette deck that needs a certain receiver to operate via remote? i do seem to recall that it worked off the CD player, but can't get the sony av3000 to control it and i don't have the original remote.

oh well, thanks for the suggestions though. keep em coming if you got any more !
