I've had this problem for a while and I'm hoping someone here can answer it for me.

I have a Samsung TXN2771HF and had an Explorer 3100HD

My problem is that shows on the HD channels with a picture format of 4:3 display with a black border all around the picture. What's happening is the 4:3 image is being "converted" to 16:9 with black bars on the left and right. When the TV is put into widescreen, it adds the black bars on the top and bottom. No amount of re-sizing the screen has enabled me to get around this. My only option is to put up with it, or only use HD when viewing naitive 16:9 pictures.

I returned the Scientific Atlanta box as it wasn't worth the expense for only a couple of movie channels. Now I have an expensive line-doubling TV used mainly for progressive scan on my DVD player. I should add that my cable company currently does not offer a differnt HD box, but if you know of one in the SA lineup that will fix my problem, let me know.

*bump*

I'm still hoping someone will have an answer for me on this. Even if the answer is "I've tried that too and you need to buy a new TV", because that's what I'm considering.
