Well I have been hearing there is a next generation of all of the brands for a while but what is the best right now? I have a DTC100 it's not the best but it was the only thing out there when I got it and it works well. I have looked at most of the new ones, Sony, Mits, Samsung, and others and the best I have seen so far is the Zenith. Take a look at it, it's hard to find at most stored though

I install mostly Sony B-55 recievers, but they are very basic and personally I don't like them. I would go with an HD Sat reciever, but if you don't want that then I would reccomend RCA's DRD485RG, it has a Dolby digital optical output and caller ID. I just got one and really like it.

Seems to be the general view that the Zenith has the best performing receiver but many people have audio dropout problems which Zenith can't (won't??) fix. After that there is the Hughes E-86 (also sold as the Mits and the Toshiba DST-3000 - they are the same box, built by Hughes). Then there is the DTC100.
Sony has an STB which has been discontinued.
There are new HD-capable STBs with Direct TV and OTA due out this fall (probably means by early 2003!!), from Samsung and from Hughes. They may be worth waiting for.
I have a Hughes E-86 which I am very impressed with. I think you will probably be OK whichever unit you choose.

I have 5 receivers (only 4 hooked up). The Mits HD is excellant. Menus are probably the best. Very versitale esp for OTA reception. It pulls in and adjusts very well. Sony is probably the best non HD reception.

Thats absolutely ridiculous. I have used almost every IRD made. I hate RCA's with a passion but there is no difference in PQ from a $49 Walmart special to an inflated Sony. I happen to like Hughes guides and menus the best but PQ on all of them is the same.

I have a Sony34" HDTV with "tuner".
Now they tell me it is a air tuner only, and for HDTV-Satellite signals, I need a $500 DirectTV tuner?!

Can someone explain, why, technically?

thanks.

Yep...It is technically a HDTV ready TV. It only means it is capable of showing a High Def picture once you buy the High def tuner. And if you get the DirecTV tuner, make sure it says "HDTV TUNER".
