All,

I am a new poster here, coming to you from Anchorage, Alaska. Anyhow, I am having a devil of a time finding an affordable replacement remote for out dual deck VHS GoVideo 4020 machine. The company wants $80 for a new one, and I just can't believe for the age of the machine that there is not something cheaper. Any thoughts? Direct emails to joe @ uaa.alaska.edu are also welcome. Thanks in advance!

Alaska Joe

You should be able to use most One For All (and certain Radio Shack) remotes to work this as it appears that the 4000 series of GoVideo VCRs respond to the Samsung VCR code. The code that's in most remotes is VCR/0240, which should work, but even better codes are VCR/0432 and VCR/0643. Certain buttons will need to be re-programmed using advanced codes, such as the arrow buttons, but that's no biggie.

If you can't find a remote locally, I can sell you a One For All URC-8811 for $19 plus $4 shipping, and I can even load in the exact code that you need.

I have thought about a universal remote or an alternate brand remote, but my question then is, would it control both VHS decks, as this is a dual deck? I have heard some people say they have only been able to access one deck with their universal remote on a dual slot machine.

With OFA/RS remotes, you can use advanced codes to program any non-programmed buttons. It appears that the GoVideo uses the same codes for each deck, you let the player know which deck you want to control by pressing either the DECK1 or DECK2 buttons, which use advanced codes 232 and 238 respectively.

People with non-OFA/RS remotes (and non-learning remotes) won't be able to program those two buttons.
