I have been trying to solve an issue with Direct TV for over a month.
I hope that someone can help. We are trying to get the Direct TV
R15 with the RF remote to go wireless. 4 technicians have been to my house
and I have talked to several supervisors and adv. techs and no one has
an answer. I have a RC32RF remote with a R15 Direct TV receiver.

Is it possible to have my receiver in another room and my TV to be in another
room and to use the wireless remote? I presently have the Hughes receiver
and remote and it works with no problem wirelessly. I want the DVR option
with the R15 but need the receiver to be in another room due to the way my
house is wired.

Can this happen? I was reading another thread with Edmund and it sounds
like he is the bomb on solving issues?

Yes it can be done, but in addition to a RF remote, you need a RF antenna attached to the back of the R15. Once you have done that, then:

1. dtv symbol device
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 6 1
4. press CH UP
5. enter the last 6 digits of the Receiver ID #, found on a sticker in the access card compartment
6. press SELECT

Now the receiver will accept both IR and RF, but the directv device on the RC32RF remote will only emit RF signals. The av1, av2, and tv are all still IR only.

I wanted to check with you to see if this info is still valid...I just signed up with Direct TV, and received the R15-500 model reciever. I had been using the Next Generation Remote Control Extender to control my Verizon box but it will not work with the Direct TV receiver...I am considering purchasing the RC24 and Antenna to replace the Next Gen product. If this info is still good, it will help me decide. thanks.

Sure its still valid. But remember not to turn on the RF through the menu, just attach the rf antenna, and do the steps in my previous post to the rf remote you get, I would stay clear of the rc24, too old. try the rc64rb or rc65rb. they have backlighting too.

So, I bought a RC65R remote and already had an RF antenna that came with anoter RF remote I had. I plugged the RF antenna into my R15 DTV + reciever, programmed the remote with the remote ID as described in the remote user's guide, and the remote controls the R15 reciever, but it doesn't appear to be using RF (I have to be in direct line of site to control the box). What am I missing? Thanks!!

Ok...I figured it out.....I had to go into the System Settings menu on the R15 and set the reciever from IR mode to RF mode. Works perfect now!

Hi, I wanted to ask a question but I suspect you may no longer be checking this site. Was the new DTV receiver you acquired the DVR receiver or the HD-DVR receiver. The straight DVR receiver is the RC-500. I got that receiver yesterday as a replacement for an older silver one and I also cannot get my RF remote to work. I have the older RC64RB and that also might be the problem as I did all of the steps you referenced. Thanks,

The current SD dvrs are R15 & R16. Both are RF remote controllable. Any HD Receiver or DVR are RF remote controllable. Where SD differs from HD, is SD dvrs can be made to accept both IR & RF remotes at the same time, where HD its one or the other. What is a RC-500?

The directions in this thread are for SD dvrs, with HD you first have to enter the menu of the receiver and put it into RF mode, then do the following on the RF remote:

Thanks for responding. On Sat. when the new machine was delivered I had converted to RF control from IR. The RF remote I have (RC64RB) did operate the DVR but only from the room in which the DVR is located versus the older silver unit could be operated from all over the house. I had put the antenna I had on the adapter in the back of the new DVR entitled OFF-Air In. I believe my old machine had an adapter that specifically referred to RF antenna but I do not remember. Could it be the this new black RC-500 DVR has very little range?

Yes it has a very little range compared to the old, reason is the rf antenna is built-in, attaching it to RF in will have no affect on RF performance. Are sure of the model #, could it be R16-500?

Thanks again - Yes the model is the RC16-500. Do you know if there are any third party remotes that could extend the range and will operate this DVR? I use a video distribution system from Channel Plus so that this one receiver is broadcast through the entire house. If not do you know if the current HD DVR as the same internal antenna with limited range or can it use an antenna? Thanks so much.
