And if only the quality of the logos was better... for the 120 logos in my file I don't think I ended up using ONE of those images.

Well, that's a key problem: where indeed. I spent about two days searching out high resolution versions I could remove the background from acceptably... I managed to find quite a few. I may post it as a collection...

well, it could not be high res graphics, but its the only site where I could find all the logos for my cable provider. Considering that I live in Brazil...

Now, as for Daniel, perhaps he could define how to recognize a high resolution version of a logo and describe the technique of acceptably removing the background. I would enjoy the hunt for the elusive devils...

The logos on Lyngsat are all no more than 132x99 pixels. In some cases, where the logo is on a white background, this is fine. However, in many cases the logos are overcompressed JPEGs or are on colored backgrounds that make them difficult to integrate with system-styled buttons (where the background of the button isn't just solid white). In those cases and depending on your application, a high resolution or at least higher quality version can be more useful.

You can usually find them on official network websites, cable company or satellite websites, on press-related sites, graphic design sites, sites where the network has sponsored something, embedded in flash files where you can at least zoom in to the logo, and so on. In some cases I've been known to take screen captures off of the actual channel when they're displaying the logo full-screen.

It takes research and, like I said, I spent two days finding the highest resolution/quality versions of the logos I wanted for my design, but then again I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Many of the logos I found were 300-800 pixels wide, and in several cases over 1000 pixels. Now that's something I can work with.

If you're happy with the logos you're already using, then enjoy! Spending all that time on something that's honestly pretty trivial isn't for everyone.

Back when I was younger, I moonlighted in desktop publishing and I commonly had to re-draw thousands of lineart items to use them in catalogs. You would be shocked at the garbage that even the largest corporate art departments would give me as artwork...

I scanned them into Photoshop, imported them into Illustrator as a template, and made new line art drawings of the correct shape that were .eps vector drawings that can be cleanly scaled.
I used versions of Photoshop and Illustrator from the mid-90s on a Mac, and now I have the CS versions on OC that I can't figure out.
The current versions have way more crap, so I don't know how quickly I could do them these days, but I am willing to try.

I feel that it would be a valuable asset to the Remote Central community if the graphic arts gurus among us could band together to do this and create a good database of clean logos.

I wasn't redoing them, just finding the biggest bitmap versions I could locate. I actually put the collection up a day or two ago, it's heavy on Canadian stations.

However I have since located an interesting source of vector logos that is yielding EXCELLENT results.
