I finally got around to checking this. My 4 fully charged batteries supply 5.2V. This shows up as "low" in the battery indicator. When I divert the positive side of the left-hand battery to pin 3 of the rechargeable pack connector (the top pin), it shows 4 full bars on the battery indicator!

This should make the rechargeables last much longer, as the NG now "knows" that I'm using rechargeables and adjusts its voltage expectation accordingly.

Are you refering to 4 individual rechargeables? If so it would be interesting to get some feedback on increased life from you once you have some "history".

I measured my ds3000 battery pack with a dvom. Black and white are grounds and red is positive 5v.

Thanks for posting your info, phlopydawg. London: yes, I'm using 4 individual AAA rechargeables.

The only change I've made is to cut the positive battery contact and re-route it to pin3 of the rechargeable connector. Pin1 is already grounded. Grounding pin2 doesn't seem to change anything, so pin2 may be related only to recharging.

Having the pos. battery connection on pin3 seems to do the trick of telling the NG that rechargeables are being used, so it lowers its expected voltage range. After 3 days of use, I still have 3 bars on the battery indicator. Before the mod. I only got 1 bar even with a full charge. My batteries are putting out 5.1V right now. That's just 0.1V below the 4-bar reading. Hopefully it won't lose a bar for each 0.1V.

Results are great so far: 7 days, and I have 2 bars left. The discussion has moved here:
