I exported my HDTivo device from my file on my Family Room remote and saved it as an .mxd file.
Loaded my Bedroom remote file and used the import command on the previously saved file. The next thing I saw was the dialog box with the ADD arrow and I added the HDTivo which brought up a pop-up dialog box indicating three devices (TV, AVR and HDTivo but selecting anything did not result in the OK box being highlighted. It remained dim and non-selectable.

What is going on and what did I do wrong?

You need to select the device on the left side and also the destination on the right side, then click the arrow. Save should become functional after that is done.

Let me know if that helps.

Thank you,

I think there is a bug in the latest version of the editor - as I can not import files anymore. The same thing happens to me with the ok button.

Pete,

That drop down didn't need to be adjusted before, but now it does. I had the same problem, but as long as you select the appropriate item in the drop down, it works.

Let me know if that helps.

Thank you,
Damon DG

Thanks for the reply Damon but I am still having problems. I see a device assign dialogue box with a heading "used external devices" and "assign device to" but when I try selecting different choices (including the one I am trying to export) the ok button still does not work?

Pete,

That is odd. Give me a call over the weekend and we'll see if we can work through it. You can reach me at: (914) 509-5360.

Hi Pete,

Each used external device must be assigned to a device in the drop down list for the "OK" button to appear. Have you assigned all of the devices in that list?

I exported one device. I select the destination device button before I press on the right arrow. That should be all that is needed. A source file (on the left) and the destination device button on the right.

That is all that should be needed if you have no used external devices. In your original post you said:

You need to assign each one of those to a device in the drop down list below. Once all three have been assigned, the OK button should be selectable. I did that with an HDTivo device I imported and it worked fine.

Anytime! Mike explained it in much more detail than I did, so he's the man to be thanking. :)

Thank you,

I don't get it. I exported the HDTivo device only from my Family room remote file. I want to import into only one Main page button so that I can control the new HDTivo I bought for the bedroom TV.

I right click the destination device and choose Import Device. I then select the file I exported. The Import Device box comes up and I select the only Available Device, the HDTivo. I then select the button on the Main Page on the right into which I want to import. I then press the right arrow to make the transfer.
The Devices Assign dialog box appears with AVR, MAIN and TV as external devices to assign.

Why?

I have only imported only one device and not any of the ones listed in the Devices Assign dialog. I don't want to assign any of these "external devices" to any of my existing devices because they are the wrong devices.

I hope somebody can point out to me what is wrong here. I read the manual again and it does not mention any Assign Device dialog for a single device import.

I'm not an expert on export (!) and import, but I found that to be the case as well. Highlight CABLE on the left for instance, and the drop down box might only give you AV AMP as an option. For some reason the device worked for me but it seemed goofy.

I think once I had the choice of 3 to assign to and if I chose the wrong one I got an error message and the editor quit and had to be restarted.

Trying to remember, I think I had the best success right clicking on MAIN on the tree view and importing there. Then it seemed to import more seamlessly.

I finally figured out what's happening. My "single device" HDTivo refers to the AVR and the TV in some of its button functions. It was those references that I was asked to re-assign. It turns out those references were not operable with my bedroom setup (i.e. no AVR in the bedroom).

I simply created another source file with the HDTivo device that deleted all buttons of the non-existent devices and then performed the export again. (BTW, How do you delete a learned button?)

On the import, it still asked to assign TV and MAIN but I could point to MAIN without causing problems. Then the OK button came alive and the import was performed.

The lesson learned is that I thought I was exporting one device but there were embedded references to other devices which I had to delete if they did not map correctly to devices on the destination setup.

Yes, if you have punch through, shortcuts or macros using other devices, they will show up in the "Assign Devices" box. I should have mentioned that in my previous post but I wasn't sure what your file contained.
