I can't seem to get the mx-500 to turn off the receiver and tv seperately. It will turn off the tv fine but it won't do anything for my rca rt2600 receiver. Do I need decrete codes for it to work or something?

RCA has done a good job with discrete on/off codes, but they might not be in the mx-500 preprogramed codes. You may want to get an inexpensive OFA or Radio Shack remote and program the available discrete codes to it and then learn it to your Mx500. This site will help: [Link: hifi-remote.com]

You may not have to go the jp1 route. You likely can input the discrete on/off codes directly to those remotes with a key sequence. There's a serious learning curve with jp1 that I think should be the last resort.

I just went to Radio Shack and picked up a 15-2103 remote. Does this remote learn advanced codes? I can get it to test the discrete code for RCA but don't know how to get it to learn the command on the remote.

The instructions for entering advanced codes into the 2103, can be found half way down the page, here; [Link: remotecentral.com]

Also go back to [Link: hifi-remote.com] and read up more on "advanced codes" and the procedures for entering. For example, there is discrete "on" code for rca (227) and "off" (219) that I found will work on most rca equipment.

Thanks Edmund and Ken! I got the discrete codes to work for the rca receiver and tv. I'm a happy camper now :)

This problem is easily solved by somewhat tricky remote learning. I spent a large amount of time trying to find advanced codes, purchased the RS 15-2103 remote to program these codes, and then found out all was unnecessary. RCA requires you to press the power button twice to turn off this receiver. What I did to program my remote, was held my hand over the first press of the remote, and had the MX-500 receive the second press of the power switch. Note, perfect timing of this capture is necessary and may take a few minutes to achieve success, but will work.
