Once again my girlfriend has ruined my MX-1000 by spilling a glass of wine on it.

(see old thread 12/00: [Link: remotecentral.com]

Anyway, this time she hid the remote for a couple of days before I found it. (Yes, I knew it was missing, but I figured it was down in the couch somewhere, and I had the Harmony that I've been playing with. My Sweetheart was hoping that it would dry out and all would be okay again. Well...when I finally figured out something was wrong, she produced it and I saw that telltell squish of liquid embedded in the LCD.
I needed to demonstrate my anger and felt it was appropriate to throw it across the room for effect. (now guys, I did not do this the first time....I was very calm). And this action did help to alleviate my genuine anger, plus (in hindsight) the inside of the remote is very cool....real quality stuff.

My questions here are:
A) Should I replace my beloved MX-1000 exactly.
B) Should I put the $200 towards an MX-700.
C) Should I replace my girlfriend. (I do love her).
D) Has anyone put their favorite remote in a Ziplock
baggie and been happy with using it that way?
E) Any other suggestions?

As always I value your opinions.
-Ken

C :-)

so how do you like the harmony? The 700 sounds interesting, but I have learnt from the past to wait until a remote is out to make such a decision. The 700 is not a TS, so since you like them it might not be the right remote for you.

A) It's up to you.
B) $200 won't get you a 700.
C) No. Remotes are great. Girlfriend's are MUCH BETTER!
D) I doubt it! LOL
E) Maybe, maybe not!

Anthony,
I don't think I can live with just the Harmony.
While it is a very cool device for channel surfing with simpler setups, it is somewhat lacking in it's ablilty to control more sophisticated systems. It has a lot of potential maybe in it's next iteration (i.e. more buttons, bigger screen), but the only thing I'm interested in the scroll wheel doing is to scroll the channels or listings, not to go through multiple clicks trying to compensate for its inherent lack of buttons or touch screen. The "state" feature is especially cool, but I have a system that can use all discrete codes anyway so that doesn't really appeal to me. Maybe, my girlfriend will start using the Harmony now.....it does seem to have a sealed LCD!
Thanks, Ken

I agree about the Harmony. It's main selling point is the ease of programming, not the vast versatility of other remotes. I'd rather struggle through programming and have a great end product, personally. But to each their own!

A) Tough choice. You'll probably love the MX-700, but the cost is $500.

B) Either you mean the MX-500, or should you sell the MX-1000 and put another $200 and buy the MX-700? I'm confused :) But if you meant the MX-500, it's obviously garnered rave reviews.

C) Nah... if she breaks your TV that's another story.

D) I don't think that's a good choice :) I think a better choice is to keep lots of distance between the drink-dropper and the drink-droppee (MX-1000).

E) Hmmm... Eat lots of fiber and drink a lot of water. Oh, did you mean remote-related?

Okay Randy, I will clarify option B:
My MX-1000 is murdered. What life that may have been resuscitated, quickly vanished when I threw it across the room spilling its guts in six directions.
So, I know I've got to spend $200 to replace it.
Now, in my twisted mind, it means that $200 is spent. Do I now get an MX-700 for only $300 more? Do you see the logic? I may even be able to get that first $200 from my girlfriend if I a..aa..aap..apologize.
Right now I am leaning in that direction. (Apologizing) LOL
Today, I emailed HTM and they replied that the 700 will be available in just a "few weeks" (per Mike Gifford).
I still love that MX-1000, but I will wait and see what is going to happen with the "promised" software before I replace it. In the meantime funeral services are Wednesday at 3 pm (closed casket). Burial immediately following. In lieu of flowers please send $$$ to: Remote Controllics Anonymous (RCA)

Ahh, the "in a few weeks" ETA... haven't heard that before :) I wish my bank ran on HomeTheaterMaster time, then my mortgage payment would be due every "few weeks" (read: 3-6 months lol).

I totally agree with you - if the liquid didn't break it, smashing it into... well, anything more than one piece, probably did.

Have you ever played with the MX-500? I prefer it to the MX-1000. It's not nearly as heavy and your thumb find the buttons easier. So, if you like that design, either the MX-500 or the MX-700 should suit you just fine.

I guess it depends on how long you're willing to wait!
