both are sony products, hdmi does allow the components to talk to each other. If they dont like each other, they may not work. I have seen this problem before. I had one system that was sony that turned on the dvd player when i turned on the tv. If you can find any firmware upgrades, tyr them or maybe try the tv remote to turn on the dvd, or try the multi-function part of the tv remote to see if it will turn on the dvd.

Any and All HDMI enabled products are (in theory) HDCP compliant, so that should not be the problem.
There have been some problems with HDMI cables not correctly wired. You might want to try a different brand.

I had an HDMI problem with a cable box, and started a thread about it; I also saw another one. Since I am lazy and have not fully studied HDMI (at all), I send links to this thread and the other two to Julie Jacobson, asking her what's up. She has already forwarded it to her HDMI person.

Seems to me that a connection scheme that can control things should come with LOTS of documentation with the source equipment and the switching equipment so we can have A CLUE what is going on.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
